We have a very important group of people standing alongside of me. I’m honored to welcome Pastor Andrew Brunson and other survivors of religious persecution to the White House.

지금 제 곁에는 정말 중요한 그룹의 사람들이 서 있습니다. 저는 앤드류 브론손 목사님을 비롯하여 종교의 박해에서 살아남은 분들을 여기 백악관으로 모시게 되어 영광입니다.

We’re grateful to be joined by Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, a former governor, as you know, as well as Pastor Paula White — a tremendous religious leader and a friend of the White House, a friend of the presidency, and a friend of the President.

여러분도 아시는, 국제종교자유연합의 미국대사로 계시는 샘 브라운백 前주지사님의 참석과 백악관의 훌륭한 종교 리더이자, 나의 친구인 폴라 화이트 목사님이 함께 참석해 주신것에 대해 감사를 드립니다.

With us today are men and women of many different religious traditions from many different countries. But what you have in common is each of you has suffered tremendously for your faith. You’ve endured harassment, threats, attacks, trials, imprisonment, and torture. I got to know many of you and helped you get some, get some of you out of the difficult situation that you were in. I’m very proud of you in the way you’ve reacted to a different life. It is a tremendous thing.

오늘날 우리는 많은 다른 나라의 다양한 종교적 전통을 가진 남녀들과 함께 살고 있습니다. 하지만 여기 계신 분들의 공통점은, 각자가 신앙을 위해 엄청난 고통을 겪었다는 것입니다. 여러분들은 괴롭힘, 협박, 공격, 재판, 감금, 고문을 견뎌온 분들입니다. 저는 여러분을 알게 되었고 여러분들이 어려운 상황에서 벗어나도록 도와드렸습니다. 저는 여러분들이 다른 삶에 반응한 방법에 대해 매우 자랑스럽습니다. 그것은 엄청난 것 입니다.

Your families are very proud, and our country is very proud, and your countries are very proud, for those of you that aren’t from the United States. Each of you has now become a witness to the importance of advancing religious liberty all around the world. It’s about religious liberty.

여러분의 가족들도 매우 자랑스러워 할 것이고, 우리 미국과 여러분들의 나라도 미국 출신이 아닌 여러분을 매우 자랑스러워 할 것입니다. 여러분 각자는 이제 전 세계에 종교의 자유를 진전시킨 중요한 증인들이 되었습니다. 이것은 종교의 자유에 대한 것입니다.  

Last year, my administration hosted the world’s first-ever meeting of foreign ministers devoted solely to the subject of international religious freedom. I want to thank all of you for joining us as we host this meeting for the second year in a row. A lot of individual breakout meetings are being had, and we’re getting a lot of ideas as to how we can help.

작년, 우리 정부는 국제 종교의 자유만을 주제로 한 세계 최초의 외무장관 회의를 주최한 바 있습니다. 2년 연속 개최되는 이 모임에 오신 여러분 모두에게 감사의 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다. 많은 개별적인 브레이크아웃 미팅이 열리고 있고, 우리가 어떻게 도울 수 있는지에 대해 우리는 많은 아이디어를 얻고 있습니다.

In America, we’ve always understood that our rights come from God, not from government. In our Bill of Rights, the first liberty is religious liberty. Each of us has the right to follow the dictates of our conscience and the demands of our religious conviction. We know that if people are not free to practice their faith, then all of the freedoms are at risk and, frankly, freedoms don’t mean very much.

미국은, 우리의 권리가 정부로부터가 아닌, 하나님으로부터 온다는 것으로 항상 이해해왔습니다. 우리의 권리장전에서, 첫번째 자유는 종교의 자유입니다. 우리 각자는 양심의 명령과 종교적 신념의 요구를 따를 권리가 있습니다. 만약 사람들이 그들의 믿음을 실천할 자유가 없다면, 모든 자유는 위험에 처하게 될 것이고, 그렇게 되면 솔직히 말해, 자유가 더이상 큰 의미가 없다는 것을 우리는 알고 있습니다.

That’s why Americans will never tire in our effort to defend and promote religious freedom. I don’t think any President has taken it as seriously as me. To me, it’s very important.  It’s vital. It’s really vital.

그렇기 때문에 미국인들은 종교의 자유를 수호하고 증진시키려는 노력을 쉬지 않고 하는 것입니다. 저는 어떤 대통령도 저만큼 이것을 중요하게 받아들인 분은 없었다고 생각합니다. 저에게 이것은 매우 중요합니다. 필수적이고, 정말 중요한 일입니다.

And I just want to thank everybody very much for being with us today. You’ve been through a lot. And I think I can say it for everyone here. You’ve been through a lot, more than most people could ever endure. And I want to congratulate you because that’s what you need, is congratulations. It’s really an honor to be with you, and I will stand side by side with you forever.

따라서 저는 오늘 우리와 함께해준 모든 분들에게 감사를 드리고 싶습니다. 지금까지 정말 고생 많으셨습니다. 그리고 여기 계신 모든 분들께 이렇게 말할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 여러분은 많은 일들을 겪었고, 대부분의 사람들이 견딜 수 있는 것보다 더 많은 것들을 겪으셨습니다. 저는 여러분께 축하를 드리고 싶습니다. 왜냐하면 그게 지금 여러분께 필요한 거라 생각합니다. 여러분들과 함께하게 되어 정말 영광이며, 저는 영원히 여러분들과 함께 서 있을 것입니다.

- 대통령님, 먼저 너무 감사드립니다..   - 네 저도 감사합니다.

I’m Ilyong from North Korea.  And first, I want to say thank you. And then my aunt, a lot of my aunt family..

저는 북한에서 온 ‘주일룡’이라고 합니다. 첫번째로, 저는 대통령께 감사드린다고 말하고 싶습니다. 그리고 저의 이모와 많은 가족들…. 그들은 정치범 수용소에 있습니다.

- Ju Chunhee, Kim Chul, Kim Jihyang, Kim Sungsik, all of them, they are in political prison camp now..  - Where?

- 주춘희, 김철, 김지향, 김성식 이렇게 4명 모두가.. 지금 정치범 수용소에 감금되어 있습니다.    - 그곳이 어디죠?

In.. I don’t know where is. They just took it at the dawn. And just because aunt’s father-in-law was a Christian..

그게.. 그 위치는 제가 모릅니다. 북한군이 저희를 새벽에 끌고 가서요. 단지 이모의 시아버지가 기독교인이라는 이유로..

and my cousin’s whole family probably executed because of they're sharing Gospel. But even though the persecution of Kim Jung Eun.

제 사촌 가족들 전부는 아마 처형당했을 겁니다. 복음을 전파했다는 이유로 말이죠. 하지만 김정은의 박해에도 불구하고..

the North Korean citizens, they are trying to.. they are.. they want Gospel and they want to worshipping now. And they are worshipping in underground churches right now. And even though a few weeks ago we had a message from North Korean underground churches and they sent a photo of the wood and they are three of them gathered there and they were praying for South Korea. So those kind of things are happening in North Korea.

하지만 김정은의 처형에도 불구하고, 북한 사람들은.. 그들은 지금도 예배를 드리기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 그들은 지금 지하교회에서 예배를 드리고 있습니다. 심지어 몇 주 전에 북한의 지하교회로부터 받은 메시지를 받았는데, 그들이 사진을 보냈고, 세 명이 모여서 대한민국을 위해 기도하고 있었습니다. 이런 일들이 지금 북한에서 일어나고 있습니다.

제가 그들을 구출하겠습니다.
