So I’m a conservative. One thing I have a hard time rationalizing to my liberal friends, conservatives on TV and politicians have a hard time articulating is intelligent reasons why the wall must be built. I am curious your thoughts on that.

저는 보수주의자인데요. 제 진보주의 친구들, TV의 보수주의자들, 정치인들을 설득하기 어려운 것 중에 하나가.. ‘왜 국경벽을 세워야 하는가’에 대한 ‘논리적인 이유’입니다. 이것에 대한 당신의 생각이 궁금합니다.

Three quick things, number one, I'm going to say some facts. I'm going to talk about fairness. Then I'm going to talk about sovereignty. Some facts, an illegal alien in the State of Arizona is twice as likely to commit a crime versus a natural-born citizen. Fact.

세 가지를 빨리 말씀드리죠. 첫번째로 저는 몇 가지 ‘팩트’에 대해 말씀드리고요, ‘공정성’에 대해서 말씀드리고요, 그리고나서 ‘주권’에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다. 몇 가지 팩트입니다. 애리조나주의 불법체류자들은 미국에서 태어난 일반 시민들에 비해 범죄를 저지를 확률이 2배 높습니다. 팩트입니다. 

90% of all heroin and fentanyl come across the southern border. Fact.

‘헤로인’과 ‘펜타닐’의 90%가 남쪽 국경을 통해서 유입됩니다. 팩트입니다.

Over 10,000 kids are illegally sex trafficked across the southern border every single year. Fact.

매년 1만명이 넘는 아이들이 남쪽 국경을 통해 불법적인 성매매를 당하고 있습니다. 팩트입니다.

We have 56,000 illegal immigrants in our federal prison system. Fact.

우리 연방교도소에는 5만6천명의 불법 이민자들이 수감되어 있습니다. 팩트입니다.

And countless in our state penitentiary system. 135 billion dollars a year. That's how much is the financial burden on US taxpayers every single year that illegal immigrants drain from our system. Fact.

그리고 우리 주교도소들에는 수많은 사람들이 있습니다. 연간 15조원이 사용됩니다. 이 많은 돈이 매년 미국 납세자들에게 부담으로 돌아갑니다. 불법 이민자들이 우리의 시스템에서 빨아들이는 재정이죠. 팩트입니다.

You put all that together. That's a pretty compelling argument that we have some problems with our southern border. Those are some facts.

이 모든걸 합쳐 보세요. 우리가 남쪽 국경에 문제가 있다는 것에 대한 꽤 설득력 있는 주장이 될 겁니다. 그것들은 전부 ‘팩트’입니다.

Number two is fairness. As Candace said it is not fair that to the people in Bolivia, it's not fair to the people in Bangladesh, and it's not fair to the people in Belarus, that had to wait in line, fill out an application form, not commit a crime, and then wait a decade to come into this country to maybe have a chance to become an American. It is not fair to them.

두번째로 ‘공정성’입니다. 캔디스가 말한대로, 이건 볼리비아 사람들, 방글라데시 사람들, 그리고 벨라루스 사람들에게 공정하지 않은 일입니다. 그들은 줄을 서고, 지원서를 내고, 범죄도 저지르지 않고 말이죠. 그리고 10년 이라는 시간이 걸려 이 나라에 오게 되고, 아마 미국인이 될 기회를 잡을지도 모르겠습니다. 이들에게 (그런 불법은) 공정하지 않습니다.

Number three is sovereignty. Why do walls matter? Why do borders matter? Borders are a physical representation of when good ideas begin and bad ideas start. If you don't believe me, just ask East and West Germany or North or South Korea. If you believe in open borders, you do not believe in the physical delineation of where good ideas start and bad ideas start.

세번째로 ‘주권’에 대한 것입니다. 왜 국경벽이 중요합니까? 왜 국경이 중요합니까? 국경은 좋은 이념과 나쁜 이념의 구분을 물리적으로 표현하는 것입니다. 만약 저를 못 믿으시겠다면, 동독과 서독에게 물어보십시요. 아니면 북한과 남한에게 물어보세요. 만약 당신이 ‘열린 국경’을 믿으신다면, 당신은 좋은 이념과 나쁜 이념이 시작되는 것에 대한 물리적인 구분을 믿지 않으시는 겁니다.   

The wall, right now, is not only important for facts I mentioned and the fairness, but also the sovereignty. We are not Mexico. We have unique culture. We have unique identity. The Mexican culture is something that should be appreciated and understood, but our culture is much different and has outpaced them over the last 50 years, and to say that we should have open borders and we should have some sort kind of transferable citizenship, cheapens the idea of the American identity and culture to the people that had waited in line and the tens of millions of immigrants that had to fly halfway across the world to come into this country.

지금 당장, 이 국경은 제가 언급한 ‘공정성’에 대한 팩트뿐만 아니라, ‘주권’에도 중요한 것입니다. 우리는 ‘멕시코’가 아닙니다. 우리는 독특한 문화가 있습니다. 우리는 독특한 정체성이 있고요. 멕시칸 문화는 인정하고, 이해해야 하는 것이죠. 하지만 우리의 문화는 그와는 많이 다르며, 지난 50년간 그들을 능가했습니다. 우리가 국경을 개방하고 일종의 호환이 가능한 시민권을 적용한다는 것은 줄을 서서 기다린 사람들과 이 나라에 들어오기 위해 세계의 절반을 날아온 수천 만명의 이민자들에 대한 미국의 정체성과 미국의 문화에 대한 개념의 가치를 깎아내리는 짓입니다.

So those are the three reasons I would give to build the wall, build it quickly, build it high, build it wide, with a big door so everyone can come in Legally. Thank you.

따라서 이 세가지 이유로 저는 국경벽을 ‘더 빨리, 더 높이, 더 넓게’ 세워야 한다고 봅니다. 아주 큰 문을 만들어서 모든 사람들이 합법적으로 들어올 수 있게 말이죠. 감사합니다.

Children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people, cartels, and they’re brought here and they used to use them to get into our country.

밀수업자들과 많은 나쁜 사람들, 카르텔들에 의해 아이들이 이 나라에 보내집니다. 그들이 여기로 보내지고, 그 나쁜 사람들이 이 나라로 들어오기 위해, 그 아이들을 이용하고 있습니다.

We now have as strong a border as we’ve ever had. We’re over 400 miles of brand new wall. You see the numbers. And we let people in, but they have to come in legally.

우리는 이제 그 어느때보다 강력한 국경을 갖게 됩니다. 우리는 640km가 넘는 완전 새로운 국경병을 가졌습니다. 여러분도 그 숫자를 보셨을거에요. 그리고 사람들을 들여보낼건데요, 단 합법적으로 와야만 합니다.
