Swing states that have liberal Governors and liberal Secretaries of State. You can see that they have broken the law and gone against our constitution with this election. And so because of that, on JAN 6th as the people of Western N Carolina send me to Washington to do a job, I will be contesting the election!

진보 주지사와 주국무장관이 버티고 있는 경합주들입니다. 여러분은 이번 선거를 통해 그들이 법을 위반하고 헌법을 어기는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 그래서 그것 때문에 웨스턴 노스캐롤라이나 국민들이 그것을 지키라고 저를 1월 6일 워싱턴으로 보낸 것이기에, 저는 이 선거에 이의를 제기할 것입니다!

That was Congressman-elect Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina. That's earlier today at the Turning Point USA, Youth Summit in South Florida. He says he'll join a growing number of representatives who will challenge the results of the election come January 6.

And Madison Cawthorn joins us. Great to talk with you. Congratulations on the election, first off, and this is a big uh quite a bold first move you're gonna make here. Tell us why you're doing it.

이제 매디슨 카쏜이 함께합니다. 말씀 나누게 되어 기쁩니다. 우선 당선을 축하드리고요. 말씀하신 것은 꽤 크고 대담한 행보가 될텐데요, 이것을 왜 하시는지 말씀해주시죠.

Well, the number one reason, I was pontificating in that talk today at SAS, the Student Action Summit. And I really started saying you know the reason it's more fun to be a Republican is that you can go to bed at night knowing that you are doing the right and the just thing.

첫번째 이유는요, 저는 오늘 학생 실천 회의(SAS)에서 그 이야기를 했었는데요. 그리고 저는 정말로, 공화당원이 되는게 더더욱 신나는 이유는 ‘내가 옳은 일, 정의로운 일을 하고 있다는 걸 인지하면서 밤에 잠들 수 있기 때문이야'라고 말하게 됐어요.

And so as I was sitting there, I know this will cause some political blow back, you know, in the end. I don't believe anyone should be sent to Washington DC for a career.. I believe they should be sent there to do a job for the American people and to represent them. I believe they should be sent there to do a job for the American people and to represent them.

그리고 제가 그 곳에 있으면 결국에는 어떠한 정치적 타격을 입을 것을 알고 있죠. 저는 그 누구도 커리어를 위해서 워싱턴 DC에 입성해야 한다고 생각지 않습니다. 저는 미국인을 위한 일을 하고, 그들을 대표하기 위해 정치를 해야하는 것이라고 믿습니다. 저는 미국인을 위한 일을 하고, 그들을 대표하기 위해 정치를 해야하는 것이라고 믿습니다.

And right now you know according to article one of the constitution, we see that in our States the election process is only allowed to be altered or changed by the State Legislature, but what we're seeing going on in seven of these very key Swing States is that as I was just you just played in that clip.

그리고 지금 헌법 제1조에 따르면, 우리는 주 의회에 의해서만 선거 과정이 변경될 수 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 보고 있는 바로 그 7개의 핵심 경합주들은 제가 앞선 영상에서 말한 것처럼 헌법을 위반하고 있다는 것이죠.

We have these rogue Democratic Governors and Secretaries of State who were altering the laws because of a pandemic and the emergency. But as I always say if you let your elected leaders break the law during an emergency, they will in the future create an emergency to break the law.

우리는 지금 전염병과 비상사태를 빌미로, 법을 바꾸고 있는 불량한 민주당 주지사들과 주국무장관들을 목도하고 있습니다. 하지만 제가 계속 말씀드리는 건, 만약 여러분의 선출된 지도자가 비상시라서 법을 위반하는 걸 여러분이 놔둔다면, 그들은 미래에 법을 어기기 위해서 비상사태를 만들거라는 점입니다.

And so I absolutely believe it is imperative that we do not allow them to set a precedent that they can come in and change election laws which then alter the absolute direction and future of our country. And so I am here representing people Western North Carolina who want me to fight.

그래서 저는 절대로 그들이 선거법을 바꾸고, 국가의 절대적인 방향과 미래를 바꾸는 선례를 남기지 말아야 한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 저는 제가 싸우기를 원하는 웨스턴 노스캐롤라이나 국민들을 대표하고 있는 것입니다.

There's a lot of people legally that analyze this and they say the idea of changing the rules at the last minute allowing them to send out all these ballots and change the way we've always voted, it doesn't make a lot of sense. But there's also it seems like there's not a lot of appetite to do anything about it. Because I think the fear of the blowback. You think that's true?  

법적으로 이런 것을 분석하는 사람들이 많습니다. 그리고 그들은 마지막 순간에 규칙을 바꾸면서 이 모든 (불법) 표들을 인정하고, 우리가 투표해온 방식을 바꾸려고 하는 것들이, 정말 말도 안되는 거라고 하는데요. 하지만 이에 대해서 어떻게 해보려는 의욕도 그다지 크지 않아 보입니다. 제 생각엔 후폭풍에 대한 두려움 때문인것 같은데요. 어떻게 생각하십니까?

Oh, I absolutely think it's true. I doubt you're ignorant of this. The majority of the people in the Republican party are spineless and they're cowards. I think that there is a new wave of conservatives that are coming up who are going to stand up and fight.

오, 완전 사실이라고 생각합니다. 이미 아시리라 생각하는데요, 공화당의 사람들의 대부분은 줏대없는 겁쟁이입니다. 저는 보수주의의 새로운 물결이 오고 있다고 생각하는데요. 바로 맞서 싸우는 보수주의자들입니다.

And you know, as it says in article two of the constitution, it is within our jurisdiction within Congress to not say that this election was exactly how it should have been. And I will not be giving my consent for us to accept these electoral votes. And because of that, you know, I think that we need more Republicans to do this.

그리고 헌법 제2조에 명시된 바와 같이, 우리의 관할 하 의회에서는, 이번 선거가 제대로 이뤄졌다고 해서는 안되는 것입니다. 그리고 저는 이번 선거인단 투표에 대한 동의를 허락지 않을 것이고요. 그렇기 때문에, 저는 이런 일을 할 더 많은 공화당원들이 우리에게 필요하다고 생각합니다.

This shouldn't be a hard decision to make. It's very clear based on constitutional law and it's very clear based on the wishes of the people. And that's who we're here to represent.

이건 어려운 결정이 아닙니다. 헌법과 국민의 소망에 비추어보면 매우 분명한 일이죠. 그리고 이런 일을 하라고 우리가 대표로 이 자리에 있는 것입니다.

Yeah it's refreshing to hear you talk. You haven't been, you know, swampified yet, I guess. Haven't been in DC long enough to fall in with the crowd. I want to ask you, you're at this Turning Point thing over the weekend. A lot of young Republicans gather there.

네, 말씀하시는 것을 들으니 상쾌해지는 것 같습니다. 당신은 아직 (정치)늪에 빠지지는 않은 것 같습니다. DC에 있는 그런 정치인들 틈에 함몰될 만큼 오래 있지 않아서 그런것 같네요. 제가 질문하고 싶은 것은, 당신은 주말 동안 '터닝포인트'에 계실 건데요. 많은 젊은 공화당원들이 그 곳에 모입니다.

It's a pretty cool thing when you talk to a lot of young people that aren't necessarily on the right. They talk about the idea of getting rid of the Electoral College. Obviously Democrats love this idea, because they probably never lose another Presidential Election. What do you think of that?

다양한 시각의 많은 젊은이들과 대화를 나누는 것은 꽤 멋진 일 입니다. 그들은 선거인단제도를 없애자는 생각에 대해 말하고 있는데요. 민주당원들은 분명 이 의견을 좋아하고 있고요.  분명히 (선거인단을 없애면) 그들은 아마 다시는 대선에서 지지 않을거라 생각하기 때문인것 같습니다. 어떻게 생각하십니까?

That's ridiculous. We created the Electoral College so that we would never have a tyranny of the majority. And that is exactly what the Democrats want. They are hungry for power and God help us if they ever get it.

말도 안되는 생각입니다. 우리는 선거인단 제도를 만들어 절대 다수의 횡포가 일어나지 않도록 했습니다. 그 다수의 횡포가 바로 민주당이 원하는 겁니다. 그들은 권력에 굶주려 있고, 그렇기에 그들이 권력을 잡아서는 안되는 것이죠.

Just don't have a lot of time real quick. When I ask you, you want to talk about term limits in Congress. You want to do that. That's some thing you're up for.

시간이 많이 없으시죠. 빠른 질문입니다. 여쭤보니, 의원님은 의회의 임기제한에 대해 말하고 싶다고 하셨는데요. 임기를 제한하고 싶으시다고요. 그것이 의원님이 원하는 것입니까?

That is my number one goal in Congress. I think actually once I get term limits on Congress, I will retire from public life and I'll go back to raising my family. But you know, I don't understand why there are people right there are people like Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi..

그것이 의회에서의 제 첫번째 목표입니다. 사실 제가 의회의 임기 제한을 받게 된다면, 저는 공직 생활을 은퇴하게 될 것이고, 다시 제 가족을 부양하는 자리로 돌아갈 것인데요. 그런데 저는 왜 미치 맥코넬이나 낸시 펠로시 같은 사람들이 의회에 있는지 이해가 가지 않습니다..

Although I do like Mitch McConnell who are being have been in Congress or in Washington for longer than I've been alive. They're disconnected from reality. They're multi-millionaires who have armored cars, bodyguards. They stand behind velvet ropes and they never get out with the normal Americans. So I think we need term limits.

비록 제 나이보다도 더 오랫동안 의회 혹은 워싱턴에 있었던 미치 맥코넬을 좋아한다 해도 말이죠. 그들은 현실과 단절되어 있습니다. 그들은 장갑차와 경호원을 가진 수백만장자 부자들입니다. 그들은 벨벳 밧줄 뒤에 서서, 평범한 미국인들과 절대 어울리지 않습니다. 그래서 임기 제한이 필요하다고 생각합니다.

I think we need Congressmen to start living in their districts rather in Washington DC so that we can represent the will of the people who we are elected to do.

저는 의원으로 선출된 그 지역의 사람들의 뜻을 대변할 수 있도록, 워싱턴 DC가 아니라 그들의 지역에서 활동하는 의원들이 필요하다고 생각합니다.

Yeah, I don't think it was ever designed to be a career politics. I think you were supposed to go out in the private sector, figure something out and then go to politics when you wanted to give something back. 네, 직업으로서의 정치라는건 애초에 없었다고 생각합니다. 먼저 민간분야로 나아가 뭔가를 터득하고, 무언가를 다시 되돌려주고자 할 때 정치계로 가는 것이 맞는 것이지요. 메디슨 카쏜 의원님, 함께 해주셔서 다시 한번 감사드리고요. 당선을 축하드리고, 만나서 반가웠습니다.
