What's up guys. This is Will Witt with PragerU. Here today with Brandon Tatum talking to people on the streets of Hollywood.

안녕하세요. 프래거유의 '윌 윗'입니다. 오늘은 '브랜든 테이텀'씨가 나오셨구요. 함께 헐리웃 사람들과 이야기 해보려고 합니다.

I'm a former police officer and we're going to talk to people about police brutality and some of the cultural things that are going on in America. Let's see how I go, man.

저는 전직 경찰이었는데요. 사람들과 경찰들의 폭력성과 미국에서 일어나는 문화적인 것들에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다. 어떻게 하는지 한번 보시죠.

Do you think that we should defund the police?

경찰을 축소시켜야 한다고 생각하시나요?

Um.. I think there needs to be a lot of changes.

음.. 저는 많은 변화가 필요하다고 생각합니다.

Yes, I really do think we should defund the police. You know, I just think there's a lot of unnecessary amounts of money going to them. That is being used I guess uh in a negative way.

네, 저는 정말로 경찰을 축소해야 한다고 생각해요. 너무 많은 불필요한 돈들이 경찰에게 투입된다고 생각하고, 그게 부정적으로 쓰이고 있다고 봅니다.

Do you think the police are racist?

경찰이 인종차별주의자라고 생각하시나요?

Some yes. I don't know about most, but a good percentage of them yeah.

경찰의 일부가 그런 것 같아요. 대부분 경찰에 대해선 모르겠어요. 하지만 그들중 상당수가 인종차별주의자라고 봅니다.

Yeah, it's just alarming that the police brutality that I've been seeing on social media. You know we still need justice for Breonna Taylor like that still needs to happen.

맞아요. 제가 SNS를 통해 본 경찰의 폭력은 정말 놀라웠어요. 우리 사회는 여전히 ‘브리오나 테일러(경찰 오발사고로 인해 죽은 흑인여성)’를 위한 정의가 필요합니다.

If you guys could say anything to a police officer now? What would you want to say?

만약 지금 경찰들에게 뭐든지 말할 수 있다면, 뭐라고 말하고 싶으신가요?

I mean.. I really do.. I really wouldn't know what to say because I feel like they're so like set in their like you know like ways that it's just hard to persuade..

저는.. 정말.. 뭐라고 해야할지는 모르겠는데요. 왜냐하면 경찰들이 너무 확고해서.. 설득시킬 어려울 것 같아서요..

Why can African-American people like.. why can I get away with things that some people can't? Like how am I less threatening than someone else? You know like why am I less threatening than you are? Like I don't.. It doesn't make sense.

왜 흑인들은.. 왜 제게 일어나지 않는 일들이 흑인들에게는 일어나는 걸까요? 왜 제가 다른 사람들보다 위협적이지 않다는 거죠? 왜 제가 당신보다 덜 위협적이라는 건가요? 모르겠네요. 이해가 되지 않아요..

So he is actually a retired cop.

사실 이 분은 은퇴한 경찰입니다.

And so if you guys had any questions about anything, he would love to answer anything.

그래서 혹시 경찰에 대해 궁금한게 있으시면, 이 분이 뭐든지 대답해 드릴겁니다.

Do you think the system is racist like in America? That's what I mean.

미국의 시스템이 ‘인종차별주의적’이라고 생각하시나요?

No, I.. I don't think the system is racist. There's no law on the books. That's against black people right? I mean, do you know of any laws that says this is a law for black people? and then everybody else don't have to abide by that. And therefore there's no laws for police officers to enforce their races.

아니요. 저는 시스템이 인종차별적이라고 생각하지 않습니다. 혹시 '이건 흑인에게만 적용되는 법이야, 다른 사람들은 따를 필요가 없어'라고 하는 법을 들어 보셨습니까? 그렇습니다. 경찰들에게 인종을 차별하라고 하는 그런 법은 없습니다.

I think that the rhetoric that's on the TV is that somehow being black is a.. I don't know you're automatically getting targeted by police and that's just not necessarily true when you look at the numbers. White people get killed twice as much as black people by police. Even unarmed individuals. There's twice as many white people and sometimes three times as many white people who are shot and armed by police than black people. And most people don't know that because the media pushes a certain narrative.

제 생각에는 TV에서 나오는 말들이 흑인들을 좀.. 당신이 경찰에게 자동적으로 타겟이 되는지는 잘 모르겠는데요.그 통계를 한 번 보시면 그게 꼭 사실이 아니라는 것을 알 겁니다. 사실 백인들이 흑인들보다 2배는 더 경찰들에게 사살되고 있거든요. 심지어 비무장한 사람들말이에요. 흑인보다 2배에서 때로는 3배도 넘는 백인들이 무장한 경찰들에게 총을 맞고 있습니다. 하지만 대부분의 사람들은 그걸 모릅니다. 왜냐하면 언론에서 특정 이야기(흑인차별)만을 계속 다루기 때문이죠.

What do you think about ‘Derek Chauvin’ like that whole thing like.. what are you.. how do you.. how do you like perceive that?

'데릭 쇼빈'(조지플로이드 살인혐의 경관)에 대해서는 경찰들은어떻게 생각하시나요? 어떻게 받아들이시나요?

Yeah I think that Derek Chauvin did not do his job. You know I don't think there's any reason to have your knee on a person's neck as they're struggling, as they begin to die. You know, I don't think any officer supports that, right? I don't think anybody does. Um and I think that justice is being served. He was.. he had been indicted, he is going to jail and I think that he's going to have his day in court.

저는 데릭 쇼빈이 잘못했다고 생각합니다. 저는 누군가가 반항한다고 해서 목을 무릎으로 죽기까지 눌러야 할 이유가 없다고 생각해요. 어떤 경찰도 그런 행동을 지지하진 않을 겁니다. 아시겠어요? 아무도 그렇지 않을거라 생각합니다. 그리고 법이 잘 집행되고 있다고 봅니다. 그는.. 그는 기소되었구요. 감옥에 갈 것이고, 그리고 저는 그가 법정에 서게 될 거라고 생각합니다.

What do you like because you're black, right? So I mean how was it like your training and everything because I feel like that's where it's coming to come down to.. it's like..

당신은 흑인이니까 말이죠.. 경찰들 교육이나 그런 것들은 어땠나요? 저는 약간 거기서부터 (흑인인종차별)이 오는 것 같거든요..

I was never trained at any point during our training to be racist and nobody was trained to be racist. Actually we were trained to treat people equal, treat people fairly. That's how you become an adequate police officer.

저는 경찰훈련중 어떤 곳에서도 인종차별주의자가 되라는 훈련을 받은것이 결코 없습니다. 아무도 그렇게 훈련받지 않습니다. 우리 경찰들은 모든 사람을 동등하고 공정하게 대하라고 훈련받습니다. 그래야 제대로 된 경찰관이 되는 것이죠.

I've never met a racist police officer. Now I think that they're out there for sure. But I've never met a racist police officer.

저는 인종차별주의 경찰을 만나본 적이 없습니다. 그들이 어딘엔가 분명 존재하겠지만요. 하지만 저는 결코 그런 경찰을 본적이 없어요.

If you treat people with respect, you'll get respect in return. When I was a police officer, I would protect people with my life. I had children and a family at home that I would leave every day and I never knew if I was going to die or not, but I did that because I love the people and when you sign up and you go through the training when you go through years of training, you're doing it because you love people.

만약 당신이 사람들을 존중한다면, 당신도 반대로 존중 받을거에요. 제가 경찰이었을때, 저는 제 생명을 걸고 사람들을 보호했었습니다. 집에 아이들과 가족을 남겨두고, 일하러 매일 집을 나섰는데요..물론 저는 제가 그 날 죽을지 아닐지 전혀 몰랐지만, 저는 최선을 다했습니다. 바로 사람들을 사랑했기 때문이죠. 경찰이 되기를 서명하고 수년간의 훈련을 받으며 그렇게 하게 되는데요. 사람들을 사랑하기 때문입니다.

I don't know sometimes I feel like black people are shot unfairly.

가끔은 정말 모르겠거든요. 그냥 흑인들이 불공평하게 총에 맞고 있다고 느껴져요.

How many black people were shot unarmed in LA in 2019? Do you know that number?

2019년에 LA에서 비무장한 흑인들이 몇 명이나 총에 맞았을까요? 몇 명인지 혹시 아시나요?

Um yeah like 100 or150? Maybe the hundreds, but like five hundred? A thousand? like you know..

100명 또는 150명 정도요? 아마 수백명이요. 500명 정도? 1000명 정도요?

500 to 1000 unarmed?

비무장한 흑인 500에서 1000명 정도라구요?

Well, it's only been one.

글쎄요, 흑인은 단 1명만 죽었습니다.

Black person shot in LA has been one. I don't think they had any this year.

비무장인채 LA에서 총에 맞은 흑인은 딱 1명입니다. 2020년 올해에는 1명도 없는 걸로 알고 있습니다.

- One unarmed black male? Bullshit. - And there were four white men killed unarmed by police.

- 비무장한 흑인 남성 1명 이라고요? XX.  - 그리고 백인의 경우 4명이 경찰에 의해 죽었습니다.

- In California? - Yes.

- 캘리포니아에서요? – 네

Yeah, I'm.. yeah I'm definitely shocked. Yeah..

그렇군요. 정말 충격이네요. 네..

And so when you look at those numbers, it changed kind of the narrative of what you see on television. Black people aren't getting killed and shot unarmed the way they are presenting. It's just that when one does, it's all over the news.

그래서 이런 통계들을 보면, 그 동안 TV에서 나오는 내러티브에 대한 생각이 바뀌게 됩니다. 흑인들은 언론이 말하는 것처럼 비무장한채 경찰에게 총을 맞거나 죽지 않습니다. 마치 사건이 1건 생기면, 모든 뉴스가 그걸 보도해 대는거죠. 

So don't just believe me. You can go do your research and that's where I found this information and it shocked me. And it actually was relieving that black people aren't just killed on you know just by the thousands in California.

제가 하는 말을 그냥 믿지 마시구요. 당신도 직접 한번 조사해 보실수 있어요. 저도 그렇게 정보를 찾았어요. 정말 충격이었죠. 한편으로는 캘리포니아에서 흑인 수천명이 그렇게 죽임을 당하지 않는 것에 대해 안심했었습니다.

But I'm really glad to hear that though that like bring some positivity into my life today like that's..

저도 오늘 그런 긍정적인 소식을 듣게 되어 정말 기쁘네요..

Yeah, it’s a lot. It changed my perspective a lot. I'm really glad you all stopped us and told me that like..

I mean that ratio from like yeah you know that was news to me.. News to me, too.

당신이 말해 준 그 통계들은 정말.. 제게 완전 새로운 뉴스였어요. 정말 처음 듣는 뉴스였어요.

Yeah, look it up. Don't just trust me. Look it up Do a ride along with the local police department. All you have to do is go to the precinct that's closest to you. They'll let you do a ride along as long as you don't have any feeling to conviction. You're not one of a murderer or something you know. You can do it right along. I'm telling you do it. It will change your life. It will change your perspective on policing in America.

조사해보세요. 그냥 저를 믿지 마시구요. 찾아보세요. 지역 경찰서에 가보세요. 가장 가까운 관할 경찰서에 가보시기만 하면 됩니다. 여러분들이 자백해야할 범죄자가 아닌이상, 경찰들은 여러분을 도와 줄꺼에요. 여러분이 살인자나 그런 범죄자가 아닌 이상에는 말이죠. 여러분도 하실 수 있으세요. 한번 해보시라는 겁니다. 그러면 인생이 바뀔거에요. 미국의 치안에 대한 관점이 바뀔겁니다.
