Good evening, I am Madison Cawthorn, and I am running to represent North Carolina’s 11th congressional district. This is a time of great adversity for our country. And I know something about adversity.

안녕하십니까, 저는 노스캐롤라이나 11 선거구의 하원의원으로 출마한 매디슨 카우쏜 이라고 합니다. 지금 우리나라는 큰 역경의 시기를 보내고 있으며, 저는 그 역경이 무엇인지를 알고 있습니다.

At 18 years old, I was in a horrific car accident that’s left me paralyzed from the waist down. Instantly, my hopes and dreams were seemingly destroyed. I was given a 1% chance of surviving. But thanks to the power of prayer, a very loving community and many skilled doctors, I made it.

18살 때, 저는 끔찍한 자동차 사고를 당해서 하반신이 마비가 되었습니다. 그 순간, 저의 희망과 꿈은 파괴되어진 것 같았습니다. 당시 저는 1%의 생존가능성이 있었는데요. 사랑하는 공동체의 기도의 힘에 정말 감사드립니다.. 그리고 많은 실력있는 의사분들에게도요. 저는 이렇게 살아남았습니다.

It took me over a year to recover. My first public outing in a wheelchair was to a pofessional baseball game. You know, before my accident, I was 6′ 3.” I stood out in a crowd. But as I wheeled through the stadium, I felt invisible.

저는 회복되기까지 1년이 걸렸습니다. 휠체어를 탄 저의 첫 외출은 프로야구경기를 보러 가는 것이었죠. 사고 전에 저의 키는 190cm였습니다. 사람들 속에 있을때면 눈에 띄었었죠. 하지만 휠체어를 타고 경기장에 가보니, 저는 보이지 않는 사람처럼 느껴졌습니다.

At 20, I thought about giving up. However, I knew I could still make a difference. You know, my accident has given me new eyes to see, and new ears to hear. God protected my mind and my ability to speak. So I say to people who feel forgotten, ignored, and invisible: I see you. I hear you.

20살이 됐을때, 저는 모든걸 포기할까도 생각해봤습니다. 하지만 저는 제가 뭔가 변화를 만들어 낼 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 저는 그 사고를 통해 새로운 것을 보고 들을 수 있는 눈과 귀를 얻었습니다. 하나님은 저의 마음과 말할 수 있는 능력을 지켜주셨습니다. 그래서 저는 잊혀지고, 무시받고, 소외되었다고 느끼는 사람들에게 이렇게 말합니다. 제가 여러분들을 보고 여러분들의 말을 듣겠습니다.

At 20, I made a choice. In 2020, our country has a choice. We can give up on the American idea, or we can work together to make our imperfect union more perfect. I choose to fight for the future, to seize the high ground and retake the Shining City on a Hill. While the radical left wants to dismantle, defund and destroy, Republicans, under President Trump’s leadership, want to rebuild, restore and renew.

20살때, 저는 결정을 했습니다. 그리고 2020년, 우리나라는 선택의 기로에 놓여 있습니다. 우리는 미국의 이념을 포기할 수도 있고, 아니면 이 불완전한 연합을 더욱 완벽하게 하기 위해 함께 협력하는 것을 선택할 수도 있습니다. 저는 미래를 위해 싸우고, 고지를 점령하고, 빛나는 우리의 도시들을 되찾아오는 것을 선택했습니다. 급진 좌파들은 (우리 사회를) 해체시키고, (경찰을) 축소시키고, 파괴하는 것들을 원하는 반면, 공화당은 트럼프 대통령의 리더십 아래에서 미국을 재건하고, 회복시키고, 다시 새롭게 하는 것을 원하고 있습니다.

I just turned 25. When I’m elected this November, I’ll be the youngest member of Congress in over 200 years. And if you don’t think young people can change the world, then you just don’t know American history.

저는 이제 막 25살이 되었습니다. 제가 만약 올해 11월에 당선이 된다면, 저는 하원의 200년 역사에 최연소 의원이 되는 것입니다. 하지만 만약 여러분이 '젊은이들은 세상을 바꿀 수 없다'라고 생각한다면, 그렇다면 여러분은 미국의 역사를 모르는 사람입니다.

George Washington was 21 when he received his first military commission. Abe Lincoln was 22 when he first ran for office. And my personal favorite James Madison was just 25 years old when he signed the declaration of independence.

조지 워싱턴은 21살 때 처음으로 군사위원이 되었습니다. 애브라함 링컨이 처음으로 공직에 출마했을 때 나이는 22살 때였습니다. 그리고 제가 가장 개인적으로 좋아하는 제임스 매디슨이 독립선언서에 서명했을 때, 그는 겨우 25살이었습니다.

In times of peril, young people have stepped up and saved this country abroad and at home. We held the line, scaled cliffs, crossed oceans, liberated camps and cracked codes. Yet, today political forces want to usher in the digital dark ages, a time of information without wisdom and tribalism without truth.

위태로운 시기에, 젊은이들이 한발 더 나아가 국내외에서 이 나라를 구해냈었습니다. 젊은이들은 물러서지 않았으며, 가파른 절벽과 바다를 건너고, 포로를 구하며, 암호를 해독해냈습니다. 하지만 오늘날 정치 세력들은 우리를 디지털 암흑시대로.. 지혜가 없고 진리없는 트리볼리즘의 정보시대로 끌어들이고 싶어합니다.

National leaders on the left have normalized emotion-based voting and a radicalized identity politics that rejects Martin Luther King’s dream.

좌파의 지도자들은 감정을 기반으로 하는 투표를 표준화시키고, 마틴 루터 킹의 꿈을 거부하는 극단적인 정체성 정치를 표준화시키려 합니다. 

MLK’s dream is our dream. For all Americans to be judged solely on their character. Millions of people risk their lives every year to come here because they believe in the dream of MLK and the American dream. Join us, as we, the party of freedom, double down on ensuring the American Dream for all people.

마틴루터킹의 꿈은 바로 우리의 꿈입니다. 모든 미국인들이 오로지 그들의 인격에 따라 평가받는 그런 꿈입니다. 수백만명의 사람들이 매년 이 곳 미국에 오기 위해 목숨을 걸고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 마틴루터킹의 꿈과 아메리칸 드림을 믿기 때문입니다. 우리와 함께 하십시요. 우리는 자유의 정당으로서 모든 사람들이 아메리칸 드림을 보장하기 위해 최선을 다할 것입니다.

We are committed to building a new town square. It welcomes all ideas and all people. Here, we will have freedom of speech, not freedom from speech. To liberals, I say let’s have a conversation. Be a true liberal, listen to other ideas and let the best ones prevail. And to conservatives, I say let’s define what we support and win the argument in areas like health care and the environment. In this new town square, you don’t have to apologize for your beliefs or cower to a mob. You can kneel before God but stand for our flag.

우리는 새로운 광장을 만들기 위해 헌신하고 있습니다. 그 곳에서는 모든 사상과 모든 사람들이 환영받습니다. 그곳에서 우리는 표현의 자유를 가집니다. 표현의 억압이 아니고 말이죠. 진보주의자들에게 저는 말합니다. 함께 대화합시다. 진짜 진보주의자가 되어봅시다. 다른 의견을 듣고 누구 의견이 베스트인지 따져 보자구요. 그리고 보수주의자들에게도 말합니다. 우리가 지지하는것들을 정의해보고, 건강보험과 환경문제 같은 것들의 토론에서 이겨봅시다. 이 새로운 광장에서는 자신의 신념에 대해 미안해하거나 폭도들에게 굽신거릴 필요가 없습니다. 여러분은 하나님 앞에서 무릎을 꿇을 수 있으며, 우리의 성조기를 지지할 수도 있습니다.    

The American idea my ancestors fought for during the Revolutionary War is just as exciting and revolutionary today as it was 250 years ago. I say to Americans who love our country, young and old, be a radical for freedom. Be a radical for liberty. Be a radical for our republic for which I stand one nation under God. With liberty and justice for all. Thank you and may God bless America.
