Mr. President, it’s obvious where you hold the NYPD in your heart. We heard the news this morning that you got some family news that your brother had fallen ill.

대통령님, 당신이 우리 NYPD를 당신 마음에 담아두고 있음은 분명합니다. 우리는 오늘 아침, 당신이 남동생의 병이 악화되었다는 소식을 들었다는 것을 알았습니다.

I just wanted to ask you what ails your brother Robert, and how is he doing?

당신의 남동생, 로버트의 병세가 어떤지 궁금합니다.. 지금 그의 상태가 어떠신지요?

Yeah. I have a wonderful brother. We’ve had a great relationship for a long time, for..from day one. It’s a long time ago. And he’s in the hospital right now, and hopefully he’ll be all right. But he’s.. he’s pretty.. he’s having a hard time.

네.. 제게 정말 훌륭한 남동생 하나 있습니다. 오랜세월간 정말 잘 지냈었지요.. 태어났을 때부터요.. 아주 오래전부터죠. 그런 동생이 지금 병원에 있습니다. 그저 나아지기만을 바랄뿐이지만.. 동생의 상태가 꽤.. 힘든 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 

And naturally we thought well, we may have to postpone this. The president may not be able to come. And then our phones rang and we were told that the president will visit his brother and then he will visit with you. That’s where he puts you. New York city police officers and family. That’s the type of president we have.

그래서 저희는 당연히 '이 행사가 연기될 수도 있겠구나. 대통령님이 오지 못할 수도 있겠구나' 라고 생각했었습니다. 그러는 가운데, 전화가 한 통 걸려왔습니다. 바로 대통령께서 그의 남동생을 방문하고, 그리고 여러분을 방문할꺼라는 전화였습니다. 대통령은 그 정도로 여러분, 뉴욕경찰들과 우리 가족들을 생각하고 있는 겁니다. 이게 바로 우리의 대통령이라는 겁니다!

So today Mr. President, there’s two things that we’d like to do. We’d like to present you with a statue that means so much to New York city officers. This statue, we do not hand out lightly. This statue is very special to New York city police officers for what it represents. This is a police officer standing tall and proud with his hand on the shoulder of a child. Now that child represents not only a little boy, not only a little girl, but a crime victim, someone that needs our help, someone that was victimized.

바로 오늘, 대통령님. 우리에게 '두 가지' 하고 싶은 일이 있습니다. 우리 뉴욕경찰에게 매우 의미가 큰 '동상'을 드리고 싶습니다. 이 동상은.. 결코 가볍게 드리는 그런 동상이 아닙니다. 이 동상은 뉴욕경찰을 상징하는 매우 특별한 동상입니다. 여기 보시면 키가 큰 경찰이 한 아이의 어깨에 손을 얹은채 자랑스럽게 서 있습니다. 여기 이 아이는 그저 어린 아이를 의미하는 것이 아닙니다. 이 아이는 범죄의 피해자, 우리의 도움이 필요한, 희생자를 대변하는 것입니다.

That’s what police officers do every day in this country and this city and this state. They stop, they put their hands, they give their comforting words, the compassionate words that helps everyone. Mr. President we know that you hold police offices in high esteem. So there’s not many of these that are given out, but we’re giving it to you today Mr. President. We hope that you can put this in a prominent spot and that people that can see it and realize that those that are in the mob that are tearing down what we do, our profession, has a supporter in the oval office that understands what this stands for. Mr. President it’s my honor.

이것이 바로 우리 경찰들이 매일 이 나라와, 이 도시와, 우리 주 안에서 하고 있는 일입니다. 경찰들은 손을 잡아주고, 위로의 말과 동정의 말을 건네주며.. 그렇게 모든 사람들을 돕고 있습니다. 대통령님, 우리는 당신이 우리 경찰들을 존중해 주신다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그래서 좀처럼 드리지 않는 이 동상을.. 오늘 대통령님께 드립니다. 우리는 당신이 이것을 잘 보이는 곳에 놓아 주셨으면 합니다.. 그래서 사람들이 이 동상을 잘 볼수 있기를 바라며, 우리가 하는 일을 무너뜨리는 폭도들이 우리를 이해하는 대통령이 우리를 지지하고 있다는 것을 깨닫기를 바랍니다. 대통령님, 영광입니다.

because there’s election that we’re in the midst of. So I’m here to say this number one, I have 36 years on this job, 21 as the president of this fine organization. I cannot remember when we’ve ever endorsed for the office of president of the United States until now. That’s how important this is. Mr. President we’re fighting for our lives out there. We don’t want this to spread to the rest of the country. We need your strong voice across the country to say we have the support of law enforcement across this country. In the New York city PBA Mr. President you earn the endorsement and you’ve earned this endorsement. I’m proud to give it.
