Good evening. My name is Jeff Van Drew. I speak to you as a member of the Republican Party, but it wasn't always that way. How I became a Republican says a lot about today's Democrat Party.

안녕하십니까. 제 이름은 제프 밴 드류 입니다. 지금 저는 공화당원으로서 여러분께 말씀을 드리지만, 제가 처음부터 공화당원이었던 것은 아니었습니다. 제가 왜 민주당원에서 공화당원이 되었는지를 들어보시면, 현재 민주당이 어떤 상태인지를 알 수 있다고 생각합니다.

I'm from South Jersey where we work hard, look after our neighbors and care about our communities. Years ago, I was a local dentist and was asked by the Democrats to run for a town council seat. I had my doubts and explained that my views were middle of the road to conservative, but the local leaders said the Democrat Party was a big tent, and that they accepted people like me.

저는 열심히 일하고, 이웃과 지역공동체가 끈끈한 뉴저지의 남쪽지역에서 왔습니다. 몇 년전, 저는 지역의 치과의사였는데 민주당으로부터 마을 의회의 의원으로 출마해달라는 요청을 받았습니다. 저는 망설였고, 제 정치성향이 중도보수라고 설명을 했습니다. 하지만 그 지역 리더는 이렇게 말했습니다. ‘민주당은 모두를 아우르는 큰 정당이고 당신 같은 사람(중도보수서양) 역시 그들이 받아들일거다’라고 말이죠.

I was elected to Council as a Democrat, but as I won seats for county office, state legislature and then Congress, I noticed things were changing. The Democrat Party had become less accepting of American tradition, less believing in American exceptionalism, less supportive of traditional faith and family. This was not the party that I knew.

저는 민주당으로서 의원에 선출되었습니다. 하지만 그후 제가 카운티 의원, 주의원 그리고 하원의원으로까지 선출되면서 뭔가 상황이 변하고 있다는 것을 알아차렸습니다. 민주당은 점점 미국의 전통을 받아들이기를 거부하고, 점점 미국의 특수성을 믿으려 하지 않으며, 점점 전통적인 신앙과 가족에 대하여 지지하지 않는다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이것은 제가 알던 그 민주당이 아니었습니다.  

In 2018 after being elected to Congress as a Democrat, I was already uncomfortable with a San Francisco liberal running the House, which is why my first vote in Congress was cast against Nancy Pelosi for Speaker.

저는 2018년 민주당의 하원의원으로 선출되었고, 그 당시 샌프란시스코 출신의 진보주의자인 낸시 펠로시가 하원의장으로 출마하는 것에 마음이 불편했습니다. 그래서 하원의원서의 제 첫번째 투표는 바로 낸시 펠로시의 하원의장에 대한 반대표 행사였습니다.    

But imagine how I felt after seeing members of The Squad quickly take control of the Democrat Party just weeks after being elected. The party had moved from liberal to radical. This new Democrat Party wasn't just for higher taxes…now they were for open borders…against our police…and against our God-given rights.

그리고 그녀가 당선된지 몇 주 만에 (급진주의) 당원들이 아주 신속하게 민주당을 장악하는 것을 보는 제 심정이 어떠했을지를 상상해 보십시요. 민주당은 진보당에서 급진주의당으로 변해버렸습니다. 이러한 새로운 민주당이 원한 것은 단지 높은 세금뿐만이 아니었습니다. 이제 그들은 국경을 열어 버리려고 하고, 우리의 경찰들을 적으로 만들고, 하나님이 주신 권리들을 반대하려고 합니다.

When the radical Democrats went after President Trump with impeachment, they made another mistake. Democrat leaders told me that I had to vote for impeachment or my life would be made difficult…and I wouldn't be allowed to run again.

이 급진적인 민주당이 트럼프 대통령을 탄핵으로 몰아갔을 때, 그들은 또 다른 실수를 범했습니다. 민주당 리더들은 제게 말했습니다. ‘트럼프 탄핵에 표를 던지시오. 그렇지 않으면 당신 삶은 힘들어질거고, 다신 공천을 받지 못할겁니다’라고 말이죠.

Listen, I'm from South Jersey. And you'd better come at me with more than just loud words and empty threats. I voted no on impeachment and it was an easy call.

이봐, 나는 뉴저지 남쪽출신이야. 당신들 그저 큰소리나 공갈협박 보다 더한 것으로 내게 덤비는 게 좋을거야. 저는 탄핵에 대한 반대표를 던졌고, 그것은 너무나도 쉬운 결정이었습니다.

Soon after, I met with President Trump and he made me feel more welcome in the Oval Office than Nancy Pelosi ever made me feel in her caucus… and a few days later, I officially changed parties and became a Republican.

얼마 후, 저는 트럼프 대통령을 만났습니다. 그는 저를 그의 집무실에서 환영해주었고, 그것은 낸시 펠로시를 만나는 것보다 더욱 편안했습니다. 그리고 며칠 후, 저는 공식적으로 당을 옮겼습니다. 공화당으로 말이죠.

Let me tell you about Joe Biden. When the Democrats tried to order me around…I was ready, willing and able to say I've had enough with their radical, Socialist agenda. Do you really believe Joe Biden is ready, willing and most of all, able to do the same?

조 바이든에 대해서 한번 말씀드려보겠습니다. 민주당에서 제게 명령을 내리려고 했을 때.. 저는 기꺼이 준비가 돼있었습니다. ‘나는 그들의 급진적이고 사회주의적인 아젠다에 신물이 난다’고 말이죠. 여러분들은 정말로 ‘조 바이든’이 대통령으로 준비가 되어있고, 무엇보다도 (트럼프 대통령이) 이룬 일들을 해낼 수 있다고 생각하십니까?

As Joe says, "come on, man." Joe Biden is being told what to do by the radicals running my former party…the same radicals trying to install him as their puppet president.

조 바이든이 “아 몰랑”이라고 말할 때, 사실 조 바이든은 민주당을 리드하는 급진주의자들로부터 이용을 당하고 있는 것입니다. 그 급진주의자들이 그를 꼭두각시 대통령으로 만들어 앉힐려고 하고 있는 겁니다.

When I'm at my local Diner, I tell people that America is the best nation in the world…and that President Trump has helped make it that way. Republicans, Independents, and even Democrats, they all know that in President Trump's America, we have a strong military, strong support for our police, strong support for our Veterans and strong support for our Seniors. In President Trump's America, we have a strong supply chain, good schools, we're energy independent and we protect our environment.

저의 동네에서 저녁을 먹을 때, 사람들에게 이렇게 말합니다, ‘미국이 세계 최고의 나라다. 그리고 트럼프 대통령은 그렇게 만드는 데 도움을 주는 사람이다’라고 말이죠. 그리고 모든 사람들이 심지어 당을 초월해서 알고 있습니다.. ‘트럼프 대통령의 미국에서 우리는 강한 군대를 보유하고, 경찰을 강력히 지지하며, 우리의 군베테랑들과 은퇴자들을 강력하게 지지하고 있다’는 것을 말이죠. 트럼프 대통령의 미국에서, 우리는 강력한 유통망, 좋은 학교들, 그리고 에너지부족으로부터 자유하며, 환경을 보호할 수 있습니다.  

There are a lot of Democrats who support our President…and are disgusted for what their old Party - what my old Party has become.

우리의 대통령을 지지하는 많은 민주당원들이 있습니다. 그리고 그들은 자신들의 그 옛날 민주당, 저의 '그 민주당'이 현재 모습으로 변질된 것에 대해 역겨워하고 있습니다.

Here's my advice. Be true to who you are now, not who the Democrats used to be. That's why I am a proud Republican, and why I will be voting for Donald Trump. Thank you.

제가 제언하나 하겠습니다. 지금 당신이 어떤 사람인지에 대해 충실하십시요. 민주당원이었던 예전의 모습이 아니고 말입니다. 그것이 바로 제가 공화당원으로서 자랑스러운 이유이며, 도널드 트럼프에게 투표를 던지는 이유입니다.  감사합니다.
