좋습니다. 존, 질문하시죠.

Yes, thank you, Mr. President.  Why did you lie to the American people?  And why should we trust what you have to say now?

감사합니다, 대통령님. 왜 미국 국민들에게 거짓말을 했나요? 그리고 왜 지금 우리가 당신이 말하는 것을 믿어야 하나요?

Such a terrible question and the phraseology. I didn’t lie. What I said is: We have to be calm; we can’t be panicked. I knew that the tapes were there. These were a series of phone calls that we had — mostly phone calls. And Bob Woodward is somebody that I respect, just from hearing the name for many, many years, not knowing too much about his work, not caring about his work.

정말 형편없는 말투에.. 끔찍한 질문이네요..저는 거짓말을 하지 않았습니다. 제가 말한 건 이거였죠.. "우리는 침착해야 합니다. 우리는 혼란에 빠지면 안됩니다" 저는 인터뷰 당시 녹음기가 있다는 걸 알고 있었습니다. 여러 번 전화를 가졌었고.. 대부분이 전화 통화 였습니다. 그리고 밥 우드워드는 제가 존경하는 사람입니다. 예전부터 유명한 사람이었으니까요.. 그가 하는 일에 대해 잘 몰랐고, 그리 신경쓰지도 않았지만요.

But I thought it would be interesting to talk to him for a period of, you know, calls. So we did that.  I don’t know if it’s good or bad.  I don’t even know if the book is good or bad, but, certainly, if he thought that was a bad statement, he would have reported it because he thinks that — you know, you don’t want to have anybody that is going to suffer medically because of some fact.  And he didn’t report it because he didn’t think it was bad. Nobody thought it was bad.

Are you saying you didn’t lie? I mean, you told him that you knew that it was “deadlier than the flu.”

Of course I didn’t.  Of course I didn’t. No, no.  No, no.

And then you went out and told the American public that this was “just like the flu.”

그리고 당신은 미국 대중에게 "이것은 독감과 같다"라고 하셨잖습니까?

Let me tell you something. We’ve had flu years..

한 가지를 말씀드리죠. 우리는 수년간 독감을 앓아 왔습니다...

I mean, you told Woodward one thing and you told everybody else something else.

No. And five times, right? Five times. You ever hear the expression, “five times”? We’ve had flu years where we lost 100,000 people. The flu is a very serious problem for this country also. And we’ve been losing them.. Scott, what kind of a number have we lost over the years with flus? Into the hundreds of thousands?

DR. ATLAS:  Well, I mean, the last five years have been something like 35 to 80 thousand per year, every year, even with antiviral drugs and even with vaccines.

Flu is a very serious problem also.

But you told Bob Woodward this is.. this is worse than the most deadly, “deadlier than the most strenuous flu.” And then you went out and said, “It’s just like the flu.”

하지만 밥에게는 이 병이 매우 가장 치명적인 독감보다 더 치명적이라고 했잖습니까? 그리고 대중에게는 “독감과 같다”라고 말하지 않았습니까?

What I went out and said is very simple.. Listen, what I went out and said is very simple: I want to show a level of confidence and I want a show strength as a leader, and I want to show that our country is going to be fine, one way or the other.  Whether we lose one person.. we shouldn’t lose any, because this shouldn’t have happened. This is China’s fault. This is nobody’s fault but China. China should not have allowed it to happen.

제가 대중에게 한 말은 아주 간단합니다. 들어보세요. 제가 대중에게 한 말은 매우 간단한 거라구요. 저는 어느 정도의 자신감을 보여주고 싶었고, 리더로서 힘을 보여주고 싶었고, 우리나라가 어떻게든 잘 될 것이라는 것을 보여주고 싶었습니다. 우리가 한 명의 사람을 잃던.. 우리는 한 명도 잃으면 안되는 거였죠. 왜냐하면 이 병은 (애초에) 발병해서는 안되는 거였으니까요. 이 일은 중국의 잘못입니다. 중국외에 그 누구의 잘못도 아닙니다. 중국은 이런 일이 발생하도록 두지 말었어야 했습니다.

Whether you have a.. one person, 180,000 people, or two and a half or 3 million people, which it could have been very seriously if we didn’t make the moves. And when you look at the opposition, where they said, “Oh, why did he put the ban on?” Doctor Fauci said we saved hundreds of thousands of lives by putting the ban on China and then, ultimately, putting the ban on Europe. There was no lie here.

한 명이든, 18만 이든, 250, 300만 이든 간에, 만약 우리가 입국금지 조치를 취하지 않았다면, 그것은 매우 심각한 일이 되었을 겁니다. 저희 반대편 사람들은 이렇게 말하죠. "오, 왜 대통령이 입국금지령을 내린거야?" 파우치 박사는 우리가 중국에 입국금지를 함으로써 수십만 명의 생명을 구했다고 말했습니다. 그리고나서 결국 유럽에도 입국금지를 내렸죠. 여기에 거짓말이 없다는 말입니다.

What we’re doing is we’re leading, and we’re leading in a proper way. And if, frankly, somebody else was leading it, they wouldn’t have closed it.

우리는 우리가 하는 일에 앞서고 있습니다. 적절한 방법으로 앞서고 있습니다. 솔직히, 다른 사람이 이끌었다면, 입국금지를 안했을 겁니다.

If you look at Nancy Pelosi, you look at Cuomo, you look at de Blasio, you look at Biden, months later, they said there’s no problem. They’re talking about me.  Months later. And before any statement was made.. you have to remember, I put the ban on China. So, obviously, outwardly I said it’s a very serious problem. And it’s always a serious problem. That doesn’t mean I’m going to jump up and down in the air and start saying, “People are going to die! People are going to die!” No. No. I’m not going to do that.

낸시 펠로시, 쿠오모(뉴욕주지사), 드블라지오(뉴욕시장), 바이든을 보십시요. 그들은 수개월후.. 모두 문제가 없다고 말했었습니다. 그들은 저에 대해 말했어요. 수개월후에요. 그리고 어떤 성명도 발표되기 전에.. 기억해야 합니다. 제가 중국입국금지를 내렸습니다. 그래서 분명히, 표면상으로 이거 매우 심각한 문제라고 말했던 거죠. 그리고 이건 항상 심각한 문제였어요. 그렇다고 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰면서 "사람들이 죽을거야! 사람들이 죽을거야!"라고 해서는 안되는 거죠. 아뇨. 아니죠. 전 그렇게 하지 않을 겁니다.

We’re going to get through this. And we’re, right now, I hope.. really think we’re going to.. we’re rounding the final turn. And a lot of good things are happening with vaccines and with therapeutics, but there’s no lying. And the way you ask that question is very disgraceful. Phil, go ahead, please. Go ahead.

우린 이 어려움을 이겨낼 겁니다. 그리고 우리는 지금.. 정말 그렇기를 희망하는데요.. 바로 우리가 이제 거의 마무리하고 있다고 보고 있습니다. 백신과 치료제로 좋은 많은 약들이 개발되고 있고요. 그리고 거짓말은 없습니다. 그리고 당신 질문 태도는 매우 수치스러운 것이었어요. 필, 질문하시죠. 하세요.

But should people trust you now?

그러면 사람들이 지금 당신을 믿어야 합니까?

Yeah, I do think so. And I think we did a great job. I think we did a great job. And the people that did such.. our generals, our admirals, Mike Pence, all of the people that have worked so hard.. and now Dr. Atlas.. all of the.. Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx..they should be respected for the job they’ve done.

그럼요. 믿어야 합니다. 우리는 정말 잘하고 있다고 생각합니다. 우리는 정말 일을 잘했습니다. 그리고 그렇게 일을 잘한 사람들, 우리 장군들, 해군장군들, 마이크 펜스, 이 모든이들이 매우 열심히 했습니다. 그리고 지금 아틀라스 박사님, 모든.. 파우치 박사님, 벌스 박사님.. 이들 모두가 이뤄낸 일에 대해서 충분히 존경받아야 합니다.

 So you won’t downplay it again? You won’t downplay it again?  Because you said you downplayed it.  That’s what you told..

그러면 현 상태를 가볍게 여기지 않겠다는 건가요? 당신이 가볍게 여겼다고 말했잖아요. 그렇게 말했었어요.

All I’m doing is.. no, I don’t want to jump up and down and start screaming “Death! Death!” because that’s not what it’s about. We have to lead a country. We’re leading a great country, and we’re doing a great job.

제가 한 일은.. 아니요. 저는 "사망자다! 사망자!"라고 소리치며 호들갑 떨고 싶지 않습니다. 그렇게 하면 안 되는 거니까요. 우리는 이 나라를 이끌어야 합니다. 우리는 이 위대한 국가를 이끌어야 한다구요. 그리고 우리는 아주 잘 해내고 있습니다.

And the people that have done such a good job should be given the kind of credit that they deserve.  We possibly have done the best jobs when you start looking at what we’re doing with the vaccines and therapeutics and ventilators. We had no ventilators, Jon. We make thousands of ventilators now a month, and we’re supplying them to the whole world. The job we’ve done is the best job. And don’t give me any credit, give the people that have done this the credit. They’ve done a great job.

그리고 이렇게 일을 잘 해낸 사람들에게는 그에 대한 공로를 마땅히 인정해 줘야 합니다. 우리는 아마 최고의 일을 해냈다고 봅니다. 처음의 백신, 치료제, 인공호흡기 등의 상황을 되돌아 보면 말이죠. 우리는 (처음에) 인공호흡기가 없었습니다, 존. 그런데 지금은 한 달에 수천 대의 인공호흡기를 만들어 전 세계에 보급하고 있습니다. 우리는 해낸 일은 정말 최고입니다. 그리고 그 공로는 제게로 돌리지 마십시요. 이 일을 해낸 사람들에게 그 공로를 주십시요. 그들이 아주 잘 해낸 것입니다.
