It’s a surprise. Socialism appeared to collapse at the end of the last century. In the 20th century, socialism flourished at the beginning. In fact, it covered about 60% of all the real estate in the planet. All the big countries, Russia, China, India were under the socialist thumb. And then at the end of the century, ‘boom’. It all went down. Reagan said we had put socialism on the ash heap of history. And I thought so, too.

놀라운 일이죠. 사회주의는 지난 세기말에 붕괴되어 없어진 것처럼 보였습니다. 20세기초 한때 사회주의는 유행했었습니다. 사실, 지구의 약 60%가 사회주의 국가였을 정도였으니까요. ‘러시아, 중국, 인도’같은 모든 거대한 국가들은 사회주의 국가였죠. 그리고는 20세기말에 되어 모두 ‘뻥’하고 망해버렸습니다. 그들 모두 망했죠. 레이건 대통령은 ‘우리가 사회주의를 역사의 잿더미 위에 올려놓았다’라고 말했습니다. 저 역시 그렇게 생각 했었습니다.   

And so the revival of socialism in the 21st century is surely an event of great importance. In fact, socialism has never been in the mainstream of American history. There have been socialist candidates in the past. Guys like Eugene Debs, a fellow named Norman Thomas. But they were always marginalized. Now not just with Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, but with the mainstream of the democratic party embracing socialist ideas. Socialism is in the forefront in a way. It's never been before. So that requires explanation. I think the short answer is we're dealing with a new type of socialism. The socialists say today, “No, no, no, we're not trying to replicate the socialism of Mao or Stalin or Lenin. Our socialism is new. In key respects, we're trying to essentially do what previous socialisms failed to do”

그래서 21세기의 ‘사회주의 부활’은 분명 매우 중요한 사건입니다. 사실, 사회주의는 미국의 역사에서 주류였던 적이 한번도 없었습니다. 과거 항상 사회주의를 추종하는 후보자들이 있었습니다만, ‘유진 데브스, 노만 토마스’ 같은 분들 말이죠. 하지만 그들은 항상 너무 약했습니다. 하지만 지금 ‘버니 샌더스와 AOC’같은 이들 뿐만 아니라, 민주당의 주축 세력들 역시 사회주의 이념을 수용하고 있습니다. 사회주의는 어떤 면에 있어서는 앞서고 있습니다. 절대 그런적이 없었는데 말이죠. 어떻게 그렇게 됐는지를 설명 드리겠습니다. 간단히 말하면, 현재 우리는 ‘새로운 형태의 사회주의’를 상대하고 있기 때문입니다. 오늘날의 사회주의자들은 이렇게 말합니다, “아니야, 그게 아니라고. 마오쩌둥, 스탈린, 레닌이 주장한 그 사회주의를 하자는 말이 아니라고. 우리가 말하는 사회주의는 완전 새로운 거야. 요점을 말하면, 우리는 예전에 실패한 그 사회주의가 놓친 본질적인 것들을 하려고 노력하고 있어”.

Yeah previous socialisms failed meaning 100 million people have been killed under socialist regimes in the last 100 years and yet they think that they can somehow replicate it. Um and make it better.

맞습니다. 지난 100년 동안 사회주의 정권 아래서 1억명이 죽었나갔다는 것이 분명 그들의 실패를 의미합니다. 하지만 그들은 어떻게든 다시 그것을 복제할 수 있다고 믿고 있는 것 같습니다. 더 좋아보이게 말이죠.  

Yeah you may.. It's almost like socialism means never having to say you're sorry. (Right) Uh you can forget about history. You can erase history. You can start a new.. Here's my point. Socialism is in fact the most discredited ideas in slavery. The great thinkers on socialism from Hayek to Solzhenitsyn and others have always seen socialism as a form of slavery. That's why Hayek's book is called the road to serfdom. And yet if someone were to say about slavery, you know what, it was kind of a good idea but the implementation was always flawed. This time we're going to get it right. Most people would think that person was clinically insane. Yet this is exactly what people say about socialism. They say, “Hey, we've tried and tried and failed, but you know what, this time we're going to make it work.” And I think that there's a certain kind of craziness in socialism the ideas and the tactics and we're seeing it all around us.

맞아요. 요즘 사회주의는 거의 이런식으로 말하죠. ‘넌 잘못한게 없어’라고요. 역사 따위는 기억못해도 괜찮아. 역사를 지워도 돼. 새롭게 시작 할 수 있어.. 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 건, 사회주의는 사실 사람들을 노예로 만드는 제도중에서 가장 형편없는 이념이라는 겁니다. 하이예크부터 솔제니친에 이르기까지 사회주의에 대한 위대한 사상가들은, 항상 사회주의를 ‘노예제도의 한 형태’로 보아 왔습니다. 바로 하이예크의 책 이름이 ‘농노로 가는 길’라고 불리우는 이유죠. 그리고 누가 노예제도에 이야기하면서, 그건 좋은 생각이지만 적용하기에는 항상 결함이 있다. 그런데 이번에 우리가 제대로 해냈다고 말한다고 칩시다. 아마 대부분의 사람들은 그 사람이 미쳤다고 할 겁니다. 하지만 지금 사람들은 ‘사회주의’에 대해 정확히 그렇게 말하고 있습니다. 사회주의자들은 이렇게 말합니다, “이봐, 우리가 계속해서 시도했는데, 실패했었지. 근데 그거 알아? 이번에는 우리가 성공시킬거야” 저는 사회주의의 그런 전략과 이념에는 어떤 특정한 또라이같은 기질이 있다고 생각합니다. 우리는 그런 것들을 주변에서 보고 있죠.    

Right, we're seeing it all around us but we are especially seeing it being perpetuated by young people. Young people really believe that this can work. There's a socialist is really. It is a form of idealism. It's great on paper. I mean who doesn't want everything to be free? Of course, you can turn around to a four-year-old and say how should the world want and they'd say how should the world run and they'd say that everything should be free. Nobody should have to work. It's a great idea on paper. But it doesn't work. So my question is how is it so.. how are so many young people not aware of not just our modern socialist history, but our socialist present, what's presently happening in Venezuela. That is what sort of boggles my mind.

맞습니다. 우리는 주변에서 그런 모습들을 보고 있죠. 특히 젊은 친구들에 의해 계속 반복되는 그런 현상을 보고 있습니다. 젊은 사람들은 정말로 이게 작동할 수 있을 거라고 생각하고 있다는 거예요. 사회주의자들이 정말 있죠. 그리고 그저 이상주의의 형태일 뿐입니다. 이론적으로는 대단합니다. 모든게 공짜라는데 싫어할 사람이 누가 있겠습니까? 당연히 4살짜리 꼬마에게 세상이 어떻게 되길 원하니 라고 물어보면, 꼬마는 세상의 모든게 공짜였으면 좋겠다라고 말하겠죠. 아무도 일을 해야할 필요가 없다고 말이죠. 이건 이론적으로는 대단합니다. 하지만 실제로는 그렇게 되지 않는단 말이죠. 제가 궁금한 점은.. ‘어떻게 그렇게 많은 젊은사람들이 실패한 사회주의의의 역사도 모를뿐만 아니라, 현재 베네수엘라에서 일어나고 있는 일들까지 모를수 있지?’라고 말이죠. 이런 생각을 할 때마다 아찔합니다..  

So the socialism that we're pursuing is in fact the socialism of Venezuela. There are close parallels between Venezuelan socialism and American socialism. However, the official doctrine of the left here is to deny that. And It’s just to say the socialism that they're pursuing.. they say is the socialism of Scandinavia. So they say, ‘Look, we know that Venezuela is in a miserable state, but that's not what we're doing. We like the way people live in Norway and Sweden. You know, um it's not that bad to live over there, is it? So why don't we import that form of socialism here?” Now the key thing to realize is that with the Scandinavians they are actually capitalist in wealth creation. Socialist and wealth distribution. Now on the wealth creation side, they never kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. They have low corporate tax rates about 20% same as here. They have no minimum wage. They have less regulation.

그렇죠. 사실 우리가 좇는 사회주의는 ‘베네수엘라의 사회주의’입니다. 베네수엘라의 사회주의와 미국의 사회주의를 보면 밀접한 유사점이 있습니다. 하지만 공식적으로 좌파들은 그걸 부정하고 있습니다. 좌파들은 자신들이 추구하는 사회주의는.. ‘스칸디나비아’의 사회주의라고 말합니다. 그들은 이렇게 말하죠, “보세요, 우리도 베네수엘라가 끔찍한 나라라는 걸 압니다. 근데 우리가 추구하는 건 그거랑은 달라요. 우리는 사람들이 노르웨이나 스웨덴처럼 사는 걸 원합니다. 한번 보세요. 그들이 사는게 괜찮지 않나요? 그런데 왜 우리는 그들의 사회주의를 도입하지 않는거죠?”라고 말이죠. 이제 우리가 ‘스칸디나비아’에 대해 알아야 할 중요한 것이 있는데, 그들은 부를 만드는데 있어서 실제로는 ‘자본주의자’들이라는 겁니다. 사회주의와 부의 분배. 지금 부의 창출 측면에서 보면, 그들은 절대로 황글알을 낳는 거위를 죽이지 않습니다. 그들은 미국과 같은 약 20%의 법인세를 냅니다. 최저임금이라는 자체가 없구요. 규제도 더 적습니다.

You can actually hire and fire people for any reason. They have no wealth tax with one exception. They have no inheritance tax. The kind of financial transaction fees that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed for America that exists in no Scandinavian country. One Scandinavian country Finland tried the universal basic income. It didn't work. They got rid of it. So the Scandinavians are actually they want to create a big pie. Now when they distribute it and here is the key point they impose the burden on the whole society. So they have high tax rates on the middle class typically 50%. In Sweden, if you make $70,000, you start off by turning half of that, $35,000 to the government. So they don't practice this politics of demonizing the rich. The rich will pay I'm going to rob peter to pay Paul so I can get Paul's vote. The Scandinavians don't do that. So the truth of it is that the American left says we want to be like Scandinavia, but they don't want to follow the Scandinavian model.

그들은 마음대로 사람들을 고용하거나 해고할 수도 있습니다. 그들은 한 가지를 제외하고는 부유세 또한 없고, 상속세도 없습니다. ‘버니 샌더스나 엘리자베스 워렌’이 미국에 제안한 ‘금융거래 수수료 따위의 것들은 ‘스칸디나비아 나라들’에는 존재하지 않는다는 겁니다. 스칸디나비아 국가중에 하나인 ‘핀란드’가 ‘보편적 기본소득’제도를 시도는 했었죠. 하지만 실패했고, 없애 버렸습니다. 그렇게 스칸디나비아 사람들은 사실상 큰 파이를 만들고 싶어합니다. 이제 그들이 그 큰 파이를 분배할 때에, 핵심은 사회 전체에다가 그 부담을 지우는 것이 특징입니다. 그래서 그들은 중산층에게 보통 50%정도되는 높은 세율을 매깁니다. 만약 당신이 스웨덴에서 $70,000(8,400만원)을 번다면, 그 절반인 $35,000(4,200만원)을 세금으로 뱉고 시작합니다. 따라서 그들은 부자들을 악마로 만드는 그런 정치질을 하지 않습니다. 부자들은 돈을 냅니다. 피터 것을 뺏어서 폴한테 줘야겠다. 그러면 폴의 투표를 받을 테니까. 스칸디나비아 사람들은 이런식으로 하지 않습니다. 따라서 진실은, 미국의 좌파들이 ‘스칸디나비아 처럼 되고 싶다’라고 하지만, 실제로 그들은 그 ‘스칸디나비아 모델’을 따르고 싶어 하지 않는다는 것입니다.
