My name is Mike O’Meara. I’m the president of the New York State Association of PBAs.

제 이름은 마이크 오미라 이며, 뉴욕주 경찰자선협회의 회장입니다.

And I just want to talk to you, the press. And I want to talk to the police officers.

저는 언론에게 하고 싶은 말이 있습니다. 경찰들에게도 할 말이 있습니다.

375 million interactions with the public every year. 375 million interactions overwhelmingly positive responses. Overwhelmingly positive responses.

매년 경찰들은 3억7천5백건의 민원을 처리하고 있습니다. 3억7천5백건의 민원들 대부분이 압도적으로 잘 처리되고 있습니다. 완전 긍정적인 반응을 얻고 있다는 말입니다.

But I read in the papers all week. We all read in the papers that in the black community mothers are worried about their children getting home from school without being killed by a cop.

그런데 제가 이번주에 신문을 봤습니다. 우리 모두가 본 그 신문에서 뭐라고 그랬는지 아십니까? 흑인지역의 어머니들이 자신의 아이가 경찰에게 죽을까봐 학교 보내기를 걱정한다는 내용이었습니다.

What world are we living in? That doesn't happen. It does not happen.

도대체 우리가 어떤 세상을 살고 있는 겁니까? 그런일은 절대 일어나지 않습니다. 일어나지 않는다는 말입니다.

I am NOT Derek Chauvin. They are not him. He killed someone. We didn't. We are restrained.

나는 데릭 쇼빈이 아닙니다. 이들도 그가 아닙니다. 그는 누군가를 죽였고, 우리는 그러지 않았습니다. 우리는 구속당하고 있습니다.

And you know what? I'm saying this to all the cops here because you know what? Everybody's trying to shame us. The legislators. The press.

저는 여기 모든 경찰들에게 이야기하는 겁니다. 그거 아십니까? 지금 모든 사람들이 우리를 부끄럽게 만들고 있습니다. 국회의원들. 언론들.

Everybody's trying to shame us. Into being embarrassed about our profession.

모두가 우리를 부끄럽게 만들고 있다고요. 우리의 직업에 대해 부끄럽게 만들고 있습니다.

But you know what? This isn't stained by someone in Minneapolis. It still got a shine on it and so do theirs. So do theirs.

그거 아십니까? 이 배지는 미네아폴리스의 그 사람에 의해 얼룩지지 않을 것입니다. 이 배지는 여전히 빛나고 있으며, 여기 모든 경찰들의 것도 마찬가지입니다.

Stop treating us like animals and thugs and start treating us with some respect. That's what we're here today to say.

우리 경찰들을 악당이나 짐승 취급하지 마십시요. 우리를 존중 해주십시요. 이것이 오늘 여기에서 제가 말하는 이유입니다.

We've been left out of the conversation. We've been vilified. It's disgusting. It's disgusting trying to make us embarrass of our profession.

우리는 대화에서 소외되었습니다. 우리는 악당처럼 되어 버렸습니다. 정말 역겹습니다. 우리의 직업을 부끄럽게 만드는 시도들이 정말 역겹습니다.

3억7천5백만건의 압도적인 민원이.. 완전 긍정적인 일처리가 있었습니다

Nobody talks about all the police officers that were killed in the last week in the United States of America and there were a number of them.

아무도 지난주 미국에서 죽은 경찰들에 대해서는 이야기하지 않더군요. 많은 경찰들이 죽었습니다.

We don't condone Minneapolis. We roundly reject what he did. It’s disgusting. It's disgusting. It's not what we do.

우리가 미네아폴리스 사건을 용납한다는게 아닙니다. 우리는 그가 그곳에서 한 일을 완강히 거부합니다. 그건 역겨운 일입니다. 그것은 우리들이 하는 일이 아닙니다.  

It’s not what police officers do. Our legislators abandoned us. The press is vilifying us.

그건 경찰들이 하는 일이 아닙니다. 우리의 국회의원들은 우리를 버렸습니다. 언론은 우리를 비난하고 있습니다.

Well, you know what guys, I'm a proud to be a cop. And I'm going to continue to be proud to be a cop until the day I retire. And that's all I have to say.

여러분 아십니까? 저는 제가 경찰이란게 자랑스럽습니다. 그리고 은퇴하는 그 날까지 저는 경찰인게 자랑스러울 것입니다. 제가 하고 싶었던 말입니다.
