Sixty-seven years ago today, guns fell silent along the Korean Demilitarized Zone after more than 3 years of brutal fighting to defeat the expansion of communism on the Korean Peninsula. 

67년 전 오늘, 공산주의의 팽창을 막기 위한 3년 이상의 잔혹한 싸움 끝에, 한국의 비무장지대의 총성은 멈췄습니다.  

On National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, we pause to remember the uncommon courage and sacrifice of ordinary Americans who fought to defend freedom and protect the values we hold dear.

우리는 ‘한국전쟁 참전용사 휴전의 날’을 맞아 자유를 수호하고 소중한 가치를 지키기 위해 싸운 미국인들의 비범한 용기와 희생’을 기억하기 위해 묵념을 합니다.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. When the conflict began, Americans were still rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of World War II, enjoying the blessings of peace and looking toward a future filled with hope and prosperity. 

올해는 625 한국전쟁이 발발한 지 70주년이 되는 해입니다. 전쟁이 시작되었을 때, 미국인들은 여전히 제2차 세계대전으로 얻은 그들의 삶의 상처를 치유하며, 평화의 축복을 즐기고 희망과 번영으로 가득 찬 미래를 바라보고 있었습니다.

When freedom and democracy were under threat on the Korean Peninsula, however, 2 million Americans left their homes, put on our Nation’s uniform, and answered their country’s call to duty.

하지만, 한반도의 ‘자유와 민주주의’가 위협받는 것을 알았고, 200만 명의 미국인들은 고향을 떠나 군복을 입고 국가의 부르심에 응답했습니다.

Their resolve was tried and tested in once obscure and unfamiliar places, such as Pork Chop Hill, Heartbreak Ridge, Chipyong-ni, Pusan, and the Chosin Reservoir, and in unnamed locations known only by grid coordinates or hilltop elevations.

그들의 결심은 ‘폭찹고지 전투, 단장의 능선 전투, 지평리 전투, 부산과 장진호 전투 등 좌표와 높이로 표시된 알 수 없는 수많은 고지’에서 시련과 시험을 거쳐야 했습니다. 

Alongside tens of thousands of coalition troops from our allies around the world, these individuals fought, bled, died, went missing, and suffered brutal captivity to defeat a determined foe amid the harshest of conditions, including sweltering heat, bone-numbing cold, and deep snow that buried valleys and rugged ridgelines.

전 세계의 우방국에서 온 수만 명의 연합군들과 함께, 이 병사들은 무더위와 뼈에 사무치는 추위, 그리고 계곡과 험준한 능선들을 지워버리는 엄청난 눈을 헤치는 가장 가혹한 상황 속에서 완강한 적들을 물리치기 위해 싸우고, 피 흘리고, 죽고, 실종되고, 잔인한 포로로 고통을 받기도 했습니다.

Their unquestioned valor, determination, and patriotism halted communist aggression and restored liberty and dignity for the South Korean people. 

이들의 결연한 용맹과 결단력, 그리고 애국심은 그 공산주의의 침략을 중단시켰으며, 남한 국민들의 자유와 존엄성을 회복시켰습니다.  

In our Nation’s Capital, the black granite wall of the Korean War Veterans Memorial stands as a testament to their sacrifice, etched with the words “Freedom is Not Free.”

우리 미국의 수도에 위치한 ‘한국전쟁 참전용사 기념관’의 검은 화강암 벽에는, 그들의 희생을 증명하는 증거로서 이런 글귀가 있습니다.  "자유는 거저 주어지지 않는다"

In total, more than 36,000 Americans gave their lives in the Korean War, more than 103,000 were wounded, and nearly 8,000 went missing in action.

총 36,000명 이상의 미국인이 한국전쟁에 목숨을 바쳤으며, 103,000여 명이 부상을 당했고, 약 8,000여 명은 실종되었습니다.

Today, the Republic of Korea once decimated in the aftermath of the war, is one of the world’s most vibrant, dynamic, and economically prosperous democracies and one of our strongest allies.

오늘날, 한때 전쟁으로 소멸될 뻔했던 ‘대한민국’은 세계에서 가장 활기차고 역동적이며, 경제적으로 번영한 민주주의 국가 중의 하나가 되었으며, 우리의 가장 강력한 동맹국 중의 하나가 되었습니다.

Our Armed Forces continue to proudly serve side-by-side with our Korean military counterparts. This ironclad alliance, forged in war and reinforced by a shared love of liberty and deep ties of friendship, is vital to peace and stability in both Asia and the world.

우리 미군은 자랑스럽게도 현재까지 한국 군과 함께 그 곳을 지키고 있습니다. 전쟁속에서 맺어진 이 철통같은 동맹은 자유에 대한 사랑과 깊은 우정의 유대로 강화되었으며, 이는 아시아와 세계 평화의 안정에 있어서 필수적인 것입니다.

As we commemorate the 67th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, we renew our commitment to the principles of liberty for which our Korean War veterans so valiantly fought.

한국전쟁 정전 67주년을 기념하면서, 우리는 한국전쟁에 참전한 용사들이 용감하게 싸웠던 자유의 원칙을 다시 한번 다짐하게 됩니다.

We are eternally grateful for the families that endured the unimaginable sacrifices and heartache of war, and we are thankful for all the men and women who helped change the fate of a nation.

우리는 상상조차 할 수 없는 전쟁의 희생과 아픔을 견뎌낸 그 가족들에게 영원히 감사드리며, 대한민국이라는 한 나라의 운명을 바꾸는 데 일조했던 모든 분들에게 감사를 드립니다.

The 38 months of bloody warfare represent the honorable legacy of a selfless and courageous generation of American patriots.

38개월간의 그 피의 전쟁은 ‘이타적이며 용감한 미국의 애국 세대’를 대표하는 명예로운 유산으로 남게 되었습니다.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim July 27, 2020, as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities that honor and give thanks to our distinguished Korean War Veterans.

따라서 이제, 나, 도널드 J. 트럼프 미국 대통령은 헌법과 미국의 법률에 따라 나에게 부여된 권한으로 2020년 7월 27일을 ‘한국전 참전용사 휴전의 날’로 선포합니다. 나는 모든 미국인들이 우리의 뛰어난 한국전 참전용사들에게 경의를 표하고 감사를 표하는 적절한 격식과 활동으로 이 날을 지켜줄 것을 촉구합니다.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of July, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fifth.
