아시아인 차별하는 '흑인 내로남불' _ 디네시 디수자

최근 미국에서 일어나는 '아시아계-미국인'에 대한 인종차별이 이슈다.

 

미국의 대중언론들은 한결같이 가해자들에게 '백인우월주의'라는 프레임을 씌우고 있지만, 사실은 크게 다르다. 애틀랜타 총격사건의 가해자는 '성도착증'환자로 알려졌으며, 콜로라도 총격사건 역시 뭐 인종차별사건은 아니었지만, '시리아-아랍계' 가해자로 밝혀졌다. 

 

그러면 정말로 아시아계-미국인을 차별하는 사람들은 누굴까? 미국 보수평론가이자 영화감독 '디네시 디수자'는 '좌파' 그리고 '흑인'들을 지목했다. 아래 영상과 스크립트를 통해 그의 이야기를 들어보자.

Who hates Asian Americans? Who is vilifying them? Who is discriminating against them? Who is preventing Asian Americans from achieving through effort and industry and merit and success their American dream?

누가 ‘아시아계 미국인’을 혐오합니까? 누가 그들을 비난하고 있습니까? 누가 그들을 차별하고 있나요? 누가 ‘아시아계 미국인들’이 그들의 아메리칸 드림을 향한 노력과 업적, 성과와 성공을 못하도록 막고 있습니까?

 

 

I guess I'm in this camp, Asian Americans and if I listen to recent rhetoric. It appears like ‘My great enemy is the white supremacists.’ Now I've talked before that in these hate crime incidents. They are not being perpetrated by white supremacists. That is absolutely false narratives from the left. They're trying to create an illusion here. Even in the Atlanta case, they go “Yeah we got it. We got it. Here's a white supremacist.” Well, that guy wasn't a white supremacist. He was essentially a sex pervert.

저는 이 ‘아시아계 미국인’그룹에 속해 있다고 생각하는데요, 만약 제가 최근의 말들을 듣는다면, 그건 마치 ‘저의 최대의 적은 백인우월주의자들’인 것처럼 보입니다. 자, 저는 이 혐오 범죄 사건 이전에 이야기한 적이 있습니다. 그러한 짓들은 백인우월주의자들에 의해서 저질러진 것이 아닙니다. 그건 좌파들이 말하는 완전히 잘못된 내러티브입니다. 그들은 이 부분에 대해 혼란을 주려고 하고 있습니다. 심지어 애틀랜타 사건 조차도, 그들은 이렇게 말했습니다, “좋아, 우리가 잡았어. 우리가 잡았어. 여기 백인우월주의자 짓이네.” 글쎄요. 그 남자는 백인우월주의자가 아니었습니다. 그는 그저 성중독자였습니다.

 

 

And in the other cases if you begin to look closely, you see that the vast majority of attacks and proportionately, this is by a factor of eight to one, they're launched by Blacks, by African Americans against Asian Americans. Remember most of these attacks are occurring in Blue America, in the cities in which Asian Americans are concentrated. New York City, for example San Francisco places like that.

그리고 다른 사건의 경우, 만약 여러분이 더 자세히 들여다보시면, 대부분의 공격들이 바로 흑인들에 의해 일어나고 있습니다. 아시아계 미국인들에게 흑인들이 공경한다는 것이죠. 기억하십시요, 이러한 공격의 대부분은 ‘아시아계 미국인’들이 밀집해 있는 ‘민주당의 도시’들에서 발생하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 뉴욕시, 샌프란시스코와 같은 곳들 말입니다.

 

 

So the hate crimes narrative is totally bogus. But it's kind of funny to see these university presidents of Ivy league schools. All jumping on the bandwagon and expressing their political solidarity with Asian Americans.

그래서 ‘혐오 범죄’라는 내러티브는 완전 가짜입니다. 그리고 아이비리그 학교들의 총장들을 보면 참 재미있습니다. 이러한 모든 흐름에 편승하여, 아시아계 미국인들과의 정치적 연대를 표명하고 있습니다.   

 

 

A recent statement from the president of Harvard talking about ‘The school must stand as a bulwark against hatred toward Asian Americans.’ And we get pretty much the same tone here is a Columbia president Lee Bollinger ‘To the many thousands in our Columbia community who are Asian or Asian American, we want to know that we too on your behalf feel the anguish and justifiable fear.. blah blah blah.’

하버드 총장은 최근 성명에서, ‘우리 학교는 아시아계 미국인들에 대한 증오에  대항하는 보루의 역할을 해야합니다’라고 말했습니다. 그리고 컬럼비아 대학교의 리 볼링거 총장 역시 상당히 같은 말을 했습니다, ‘우리 컬럼비아 대학의 수천명의 아시아인들 또는 아시아계 미국인들에게 전합니다. 우리 역시 여러분이 느끼는 고통과 공포를 느끼고 싶다고, 어쩌고 저쩌고..”  

 

 

I mean all these memos sound exactly the same. Dartmouth college, Phil Hanlon, the president, he goes, ‘We stand in solidarity with members of our Asian-American community.’ The Yale psychology department talks about ‘Anti-Asian prejudice is horrible and goes on and on and on..’

그러니까 모든 이런 문구들이 정확히 같은 말로 들린다는 겁니다. 다트머스 대학교의 필 핸론 총장은 ‘우리는 아시아계 미국인 공동체의 사람들과 연대하고 있습니다’라고 말했습니다. 예일대학교 심리학과 에서는 ‘반아시아적 편견은 끔찍합니다. 어쩌고 저쩌고..’라고 말했죠.

 

 

And yet I ask a simple question. Which institutions in our society are systematically discriminating against Asian Americans? The top eight contenders, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Penn. The eight Ivy league institutions and selective colleges throughout the country. They are systematically discriminating in favor of Blacks and Latinos and against Asian Americans.

하지만 저는 아주 간단한 질문을 하고 싶습니다. ‘우리 사회에서 아시아계 미국인들을 시스템적으로 차별하는 기관이 어디입니까?’라고 말이죠. 최고의 8곳의 경쟁자들이 있습니다. 하버드, 예일, 프린스턴, 다트머스, 컬럼비아, 코넬, 브라운, 펜실베이아가 바로 그곳이죠. 이 8개의 아이비리그 대학교들과 미국 전역의 선별된 대학교들이죠. 그들은 시스템적으로 흑인과 남미사람들에게 유리하도록 아시아계 미국인들을 차별하고 있습니다.

 

 

Now, why are they doing this? They're doing this because in their view Asian Americans are quote overrepresented. Overrepresented. In other words, they are doing too well considering their numbers. Asian Americans might be for example six or seven percent in a surrounding community, but 25-30 percent at Berkeley or Oberlin or Princeton.

자, 그들은 왜 이런 짓을 하는 걸까요? 그들은 이런 짓을 하는 이유는 그들이 볼 때, 아시아계 미국인들이 과하게 억압되어 있다고 보기 때문입니다. 과하게 억압되었다고 말이죠. 즉, 그들은 그들의 인구에 비해 너무나도 잘나가고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 아시아계 미국인들은 그들이 속한 지역사회에 고작 6-7%정도 인구일 겁니다. 하지만 그들은 버클리, 오벌린, 프린스턴과 같은 좋은 학교에 25-30%까지 차지하고 있죠.  

 

 

And so Princeton goes, ‘Let's bring down the number of Asians’ and how do they do this? They do it by creating a multiple track racial admission system in which in a sense every race competes, but they compete only against members of their own race. They run in their own racial lane.

그래서 프린스턴 대학교는, ‘아시안들의 숫자를 줄입시다’라고 했습니다. 그리고 그들이 어떻게 그것을 했습니까? 그들은 모든 인종이 경쟁한다는 ‘다양한 인종 입학 시스템’을 만들어냈습니다. 그래서 그들은 오로지 ‘같은 인종들끼리만’ 경쟁하도록 했습니다. 같은 인종내에서만 경쟁하도록 한 것이죠.  

 

 

And what is the effect of this? It's very startling. There was a two-year study conducted by the department of education. This was in the last four years. And it concluded and I now read you the result, ‘White and Asian American applicants had a one-tenth to one-fourth chance of acceptance compared with students from racial minority groups who had the same qualifications.’

그래서 이 제도의 효과는 어땠을까요? 매우 놀라웠습니다. 교육부에서 2년 동안 실시했던 연구가 있었습니다. 지난 4년 동안 일어난 것이었죠. 그리고 그들이 결론을 내리길, 제가 그 결과를 읽어드리죠, ‘백인과 아시아계 미국인 지원자들은, 동일한 자격을 가진 소수 인종 그그룹과 비교했을 때, 합격할 확률이 겨우 10-25%였다’입니다.

 

 

So same grades, same test scores, same extracurriculars, the bottom line of it is if you are white or Asian American, you're almost certain not to get in. If you're Black or Latino, you're almost certain to get in.

그래서 ‘같은 성적표, 같은 시험 성적, 같은 과외활동’에서 말이죠. 이것이 말하는 중요한 것은요, 만약 여러분이 백인이거나 아시아계 미국인이라면, 여러분은 거의 입학하기가 어렵다는 것입니다. 반대로 만약 여러분이 ‘흑인 이거나 라틴사람’이면, 여러분은 틀림없이 입학한다는 말입니다.

 

 

So you know the left talks a lot about the fact that we have institutional racism in this country and while institutional racism. I take it racism that doesn't just involve shouting and epithet or something that happens episodically, but racism that is built into structures.

그래서 여러분, 좌파들이 ‘우리나라에 구조적인 인종차별이 존재한다는 사실에 대해 많이 이야기한다’라는 것을 아실 겁니다. 저는 단지 외치고, 비방하고, 어쩌다 우연히 일어나는 인종차별이 아니라, 제도적으로 만들어진 인종차별이라고 생각합니다.

 

 

And so here we have it. This is institutional racism. We've got structures. Elite structures of education which by the way have a lot of impact on the kind of credentials. You end up with the kind of jobs you get, your opportunities in life. So this is not an inconsequential institution. That's why people struggle so hard to get in and yet these institutions are institutionally, systematically, discriminating in favor of some ethnic groups and against other ethnic groups.

여기 그런 인종차별이 있습니다. 이것은 제도적인 인종차별입니다. 우리는 그런 구조를 가졌습니다. 자격과 같은 것에 많은 영향력을 미치는 교육의 엘리트 제도인 것이죠. 여러분은 여러분의 직장에 따라, 삶의 기회에 따라 결정됩니다. 따라서 이러한 인종차별은 매우 중요한 것입니다. 그래서 사람들이 그러한 것을 얻으려고 몸부림치는 것이죠. 하지만 그러한 기관들은 제도적으로, 시스템적으로, 일부 인종그룹에게 유리하게, 그리고 다른 인종그룹에 대해서는 차별을 두고 있습니다.

 

 

So we have a massive violation of the principle of merit, massive violations of the principle of color blindness. And all of this is coming from the left, from the ivy league, from these university presidents and scholars for the very people who profess to be in political solidarity with the Asian American community. These are the people who are shutting us down. These are the people who are keeping us out. These are our real enemies. They profess to be our friends, but with friends like this who needs enemies.

그래서 우리는 공로에 따르는 원리와 인종에 관계없는 원칙에 대해 심각하게 위반하고 있습니다. 그리고 이러한 모든 것들이 좌파, 아이비리그 대학들과 그 총장들, 학자들로부터 나오고 있으며, 그 사람들이 바로 아시아계 미국인들과의 정치적 연대를 공언하는 사람들인 것입니다. 이들이 바로 ‘우리 경제를 문닫자’라고 하는 사람들이며, 이들이 바로 우리를 막는 사람들이며 바로 우리의 진정한 적들입니다. 그들은 우리의 친구라고 자처하지만, 이러한 친구들이 바로 적입니다.
