"우리는 우리 (백인들이) 가진 특권을 인정하고 겸손을 실천해야 합니다"

The concept of white privilege has become an important bulwark of the Democrat Party's ideology and was discussed in nearly every democratic debate.

‘백인 특권’이라는 개념은 민주당 이데올로기의 중요한 ‘방어벽’이 되어 왔으며, 거의 모든 민주당의 토론에서 거론되는 개념입니다.

I'm Ami Horowitz. I'm in Kansas City at a white privilege conference. What is white privilege you may ask? I don't know. Let’s find out.

저는 ‘아미 호로위츠’구요. 지금 캔자스시티의 한 ‘백인특권 컨퍼런스’ 현장에 나와있습니다. 도대체 ‘백인 특권’이라는게 무엇일까요? 저도 모르겠습니다. 한번 알아보죠.

This white privilege conference is over a thousand attendees. Many of them educators.

‘백인 특권 컨퍼런스’에는 천명이 넘는 사람들이 참석했습니다. 그중 대다수는 ‘교육인’들입니다.

- Do you think that it's fair to say all white people in this country have white privilege?  – Yes, yes absolutely.

- 미국에 있는 '모든 백인들'이 '백인 특권'을 가지고 있다고 생각하시나요? - 네, 그럼요. 물론이죠.

- Do all white people have white privilege?  - Yes.

- 모든 백인들이 ‘백인 특권’을 누린다고 생각하시나요?  - 네.

Yeah, I feel myself having it every day.

맞아요. 저는 제 자신이 매일 ‘백인 특권’을 누린다고 느껴요.

A country is founded on white supremacy and that like.. persists today.

‘백인 우월주의’를 기반으로 건국됐구요. 그것이 오늘날에도 계속되고 있죠.

Hyperaware feels super guilty all the time.

- That white people's countries generally are prejudiced?  - I'd go further and say we’re racist.

- 백인이 사는 나라들은 일반적으로 편견을 가지고 있다고 보시나요? - 편견 그 이상이죠. 저는 우리(백인)모두가 인종차별주의자라고 말합니다.

- Is it fair to say that all white people are racist throughout the country?  - Yes, absolutely.  - Not just a south?  -Correct. Yeah, absolutely.

- 미국의 '모든 백인들은 인종차별자'라고 말하는게 맞다고 보십니까?  - 네, 물론이죠.  - 남부지방만 그런게 아니고 미국전체가요?  - 맞습니다. 그래요, 물론입니다.

Sometimes, it's okay to be like.. Oh all white people do this

가끔 괜찮다가.. 모든 백인들이 (인종차별주의자)처럼 행동하죠.

- Is it wrong to judge people collectively?  – Yes.

- 사람들을 '집단으로 묶어' 판단하는게 나쁘다고 보시나요?  - 네.

- Is it wrong to judge people collectively?  - It's wrong to judge everyone collectively, you know.

- 사람들을 '집단으로 묶어' 판단하는것이 틀렸다고 보시나요?  - 사람들을 집단으로 판단하는건 틀린거죠.

Yeah absolutely. No one's a monolith.

당연히 틀린거죠. 개개인을 하나의 집단으로 여기면 안돼죠.

- That's wrong to judge people collectively, right?  - Do judge people? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- 사람들을 '집단으로 묶어' 판단하는것이 틀렸다고 보시지요?  - 사람들을 판단하는 거요? 그럼요. 틀린거죠.  - 분명하죠?

Tell me about some of the white privileges that you have encountered over the past let's say today. Oh gosh, I mean it’s.. I don’t know if I could give you examples.

과거 겪었던 '백인 특권'들 중에, 오늘날에도 일어나고 있는 것들에 대해 말해 주실 수 있나요? 오.. 그러니깐.. 글쎄요. 예시를 말할 수 있을지 모르겠네요..

Ah.. I’m not really today, but maybe.. sorry. I’m not good at thinking about that..

아.. 현재 일어나는 '백인특권'은 잘 모르겠는데요. 아마도.. 죄송해요. 제가 이런 생각을 잘 못해서..

Like today what white privilege if you come across?  Ah.. I sat in my room until at 12:30 this mornings.

- 오늘날에도 일어나는 그런 '백인 특권'이 있을까요?  - 아.. 제가 오늘 아침 12:30까지 방에 앉아 있을수 있는거요.

What are some of white privilege things you came across, let’s say today? Today? I mean just being in the world.

- 오늘날에도 일어나는 '백인 특권'에는 어떤 것들이 있을까요? - 오늘이요? 그냥 (백인들이) 세상에 존재하는 그 자체 같은데요. 

Is it fair to say that on a daily basis black people around this country face obstacles because of white privileges? Absolutely, absolutely.

- 지금 미국에서는 날마다 흑인들이 '백인 특권'이라는 장애물에 직면해있다고 말하는 것이 맞다고 보십니까?  - 물론이죠. 당연합니다..

White supremacy as an institution punishes black folk in the way. Daily? Daily. Absolutely.  All the time?

Absolutely, every day.

- '백인우월주의'는 제도적으로 흑인들을 벌하고 있습니다.  - 매일이요?  - 매일이죠. 물론입니다.  - 항상 그런다고요?  - 당연하죠. 매일매일이요.

How black people are consumed with this day to day and they deal this issued.. Oh. 100%!

- 흑인들이 얼마나 이 '백인특권'에 매일매일 사로잡혀 있다고 생각하십니까?

- 오. 완전 100% 매일 사로잡혀 있죠.

I mean I think that’s just so obvious that if you’re not admitting that you’re, you’re, you’re  blinding yourself to reality.

저는 (흑인들이 매일 사로잡혀 있다는건) 너무도 당연한 일이라고 보는데요. 만약 이걸 인정하지 않는다면.. 스스로 현실에 부정하며 사는 거겠죠.

Are you a professor? Yeah. Okay. That makes sense now.

- 혹시 교수님이세요?  - 네, 그런데요. - 아, (왜 그렇게 말하는지) 이제 이해가 가네요.

You know, in fact when we go to the airport, I walk with her, my wife is black. So I’ll have my hand on her so that she.. people see that I’m with her. I extend my white privilege over to her..

보세요.. 사실 제가 아내와 공항에 갈때면 말이죠. 제 아내는 흑인입니다.. 저는 꼭 제 손을 아내한테 댑니다. 그러면 아내는.. 사람들이 제 손이 아내한테 있는걸 보게 되는거죠. 그러면 저는 제게 있는 '백인 특권'이 아내한테까지 확장되는걸..

Now, I’m here in Harlem, in front of Jackie Robinson housing projects to ask residents what they think of white privilege.

이제 저는 '할렘'으로 이동했습니다. 여기 'Jakie~'에 거주하는 흑인들에게 '백인 특권'에 대한 그들의 의견을 물어 보겠습니다.

Have you heard about that? I’ve heard about it, but I don’t think about it.

- '백인 특권'에 대해 들어는 보셨나요?  - 들어보긴 한것 같은데.. 생각해 본적은 없는데요.

- When you wake up in the morning, do you immediately think about or are consumed with the idea of white privilege?  - No.

- 아침에 일어나자마자, 즉시 '백인 특권'이라는 생각에 사로잡히시나요?  - 아니요.

- You don’t think about that all day long every day? No? - No.

- 매일매일 하루종일 '백인 특권'에 대해 생각하지 않으신다구요? - 아니요.  - 아니시라구요?  - 아니요.

No, I'm not consuming with it at all.

아니요. 저는 '백인특권'에 대해 전혀 생각하지 않아요.

I teach students. I'm not consuming anything except for runny noses..

저는 학생들을 가르칩니다. 애들이 코흘리는 거 외에는 신경쓰고 있지 않아요.

My mom didn't raise me. It’s.. to view colors.. it’s the object of anything.

저희 어머니는 절 그렇게 키우지 않으셨어요. 그.. 인종을 보는.. 그건 정말 안 좋은 거잖아요.

Do you wake up every day thinking I am not going to succeed today because of white privilege?

혹시 '백인 특권' 때문에 본인이 성공하지 못할거라 생각하며 매일 아침 일어나시나요?

No, obviously not. You see, I’m my own businessman.

아니요. 전혀 아닙니다. 보시다시피, 저는 제 사업을 가지고 있어요.

Do you think it’s damaging to tell your kids and teach your kids you’re a black kid that you're not gonna  succeed in life because of white privleges?

당신 아이들에게 너희는 흑인이고, ‘백인 특권’ 때문에 너희들은 인생에서 성공하지 못할 거라고 말하고 가르치는것이 아이들에게 해가 된다고 생각하십니까?

Of course, of course. It makes them think okay well I'm going to be nothing if I want to be a doctor, I can't even do it anymore. It gives me no hope.

물론이죠. 당연히 해가 되죠. 그렇게 말하고 가르치면, 아이들은 ‘나는 아무것도 될 수 없고, 아무 희망도 없다’고 생각하게 만들겠죠.

It’s America. If you’re willing to pull off an epic, you'll do what you got to do.

여긴 미국입니다. 만약 당신이 큰 일을 할 거라면, 당신이 해야할 일을 해야 할겁니다.

I got kids in here me that's lawyers, doctors. They grew up out of this building.

내 아이들이 변호사고, 의사입니다. 그 아이들이 바로 이 건물에서 자랐습니다.

I know it sounds cliche but I can accomplish anything.

상투적으로 들리시겠지만, 저는 뭐든지 할 수 있어요.

My daughter is graduating at the top of her class.

제 딸은 반에서 1등 으로 졸업하고 있답니다.

I'll say to them how many black people do you know.

이렇게 물어보고 싶네요. “니들이 아는 흑인이 몇 명이냐 있냐?”

Do you think that sometimes white people just kind of shut up a little bit?  

가끔씩은 백인들이 그냥 입닥치고 있어야 한다고 생각하시나요?

Oh yeah, for sure. Then white people should definitely shut xxxx.  

오, 맞아요. 물론이죠. 백인들은 정말 xxxx 야 해요.

We, white Americans need to do a better job of listening when African Americans talk.

우리 미국의 백인들은 ‘흑인들이 하는 말’을 잘 더 잘 들을줄 알아야 합니다.
