I’m the proud mom of two girls, 8 and 10. My youngest daughter is transgender. The Trump administration has attacked the rights of transgender people, banning them from military service, weakening non-discrimination protections, and even removing the word transgender from some government websites. How will you, as president, reverse this dangerous and discriminatory agenda and ensure that the lives and rights of LGBTQ people are protected under US law?

저는 8살과 10살 두 딸을 둔 자랑스러운 엄마입니다. 저희 막내딸은 트랜스 젠더죠. 트럼프 정부는 트랜스 젠더들의 권리를 공격하고, 이들의 군복무를 금지시키고, 차별금지를 위한 보호를 약화시키며, 심지어 정부의 일부 웹사이트에 ‘트랜스젠더’라는 단어 자체를 없애고 있습니다. 당신은 대통령으로서 어떻게  이 위험하고 차별적인 아젠다를 뒤엎고, 미국 법아래서 LGBTQ 사람들의 권리와 삶을 보장할 것인가요?

I will flat out just change the law. Eliminate those executive orders, number one. You may recall, I’m the guy who said… I was raised by a man who, I remember, I was being dropped off. My dad was a high school educated, well-read man who was a really decent guy. And I was being dropped off to get an application in the center of our city, Wilmington, Delaware, the corporate capital of the world at the time. And there was two men.. I’m getting out to get an application to be a lifeguard in the African-American community, because there was a big swimming pool complex.

그냥 법을 바꿔버릴 겁니다. 그런 행정명령들을 제거할 겁니다, 첫번째로 말이죠. 기억하실지 모르겠는데..  저는 그렇게 말하던 사람.. 저는 아버지 아래서 자랐습니다. 기억합니다. 제가 차에서 내리고 있었죠. 제 아버지는 고졸이었고, 글을 잘 읽는 정말 괜찮은 분이셨어요. 그때 저는 지원서를 내기 위해 차에서 내리고 있었죠. 당시 세계 기업들의 수도였던 델라웨어 윌밍턴에서 말이죠. 그때 거기 두 남자가 있었고.. 저는 흑인 지역사회의 구조요원이 되기 위한 지원서를 내려고 하고 있었던 거죠. 왜냐하면 거기에 큰 수영장 복합시설이 있었거든요.

And these two men, well-dressed, leaned up and hugged one another and kissed one another. I’m getting out of the car at the light, and I turned to my dad. My dad looked me. He said, “Joey, it’s simple. They love each other.” The idea that an 8 year old child or a 10 year old child decides, “You know what I decided I want to be transgender. That’s what I think I’d like to be. It’d make my life a lot easier.”

그리고 잘 차려입은 그 두 남자가 서로 기대어 끌어안고, 서로에게 키스를 하고 있었습니다. 저는 신호에 맞춰 차에서 내리고 있었고, 아버지를 쳐다는데, 아버지는 저를 바라보며 말했습니다, “조, 간단한거야. 저 둘은 서로 사랑하는거란다”. 당신의 8살, 10살난 아이들이 결정한 생각은 이겁니다, “그거 아세요? 나는 트랜스젠더가 되기로 결심했어요. 그게 바로 내가 되고 싶은거에요. 그러면 내 삶이 더 편해질꺼에요”라고 말이죠.
